Viking Astrild: 152 departures on the Elbe, and a note on the ship's name
Measured on 25 August 2026: 100 departures from Děčín to Lutherstadt Wittenberg and 52 the reverse, out of 152 in total.
The ship is named Astrild
Better settled at once, because the spelling circulates both ways. The ship delivered for the Elbe carries the name Astrild, with a final L. The builder, Neptun Werft of the Meyer group, announces her under that name, paired with her sister Beyla.
Our address still carries the spelling without the L, inherited from an old entry. The calendar and the departures are correct. If you arrived here searching the other spelling, you are in the right place.
The Elbe: Prague at one end, Luther at the other
The route links Děčín, in Czechia, to Lutherstadt Wittenberg, in Germany. Most itineraries add Prague at the start or the end, by road, because the Vltava is not navigable for a ship this size.
Between them, Dresden. The city was destroyed in February 1945 by bombing that levelled the historic centre. The Frauenkirche stayed forty-five years as a heap of stone, deliberately left that way as a memorial, then was rebuilt between 1994 and 2005 by reincorporating the original blocks, recovered one by one. You can pick them out by eye: they are black, the rest is pale.
And Meissen, twenty-five kilometres away, where in 1708 the secret of hard-paste porcelain, kept by China for six centuries, was broken. The manufactory, founded in 1710, is the oldest in Europe and still operates.
The hull: Elbe class, 98 berths
She is not a Longship. The two Elbe ships measure about 110 metres and carry 98 guests to 33 crew. That is the smallest capacity in Viking's European river fleet after the Douro's.
One crew member for every 2.97 guests, a tighter ratio than a Rhine Longship's. Each class in the fleet has its own: there is no single figure for « river cruising ».
The shallow draught is not a comfort choice. On the Elbe it is the condition on which the service exists at all.
Viking Beyla is her sister ship, with 155 departures. Elsewhere in the fleet, Viking Heimdal offers the fullest calendar with 206.
Astrild, the late-invented love
Astrild does not belong to the old Norse corpus. She is an invention of seventeenth-century Scandinavian poets, who wanted a local equivalent to Cupid and built one from ást, love. A Norse deity born of a literary need, a thousand years after the others.
Getting there from Montreal
Prague requires a connection from Montreal, usually through Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Paris or London. Berlin, another possible gateway, does too. Viking Helgrim offers an even smaller format, on the Portuguese Douro.
