Viking Forseti: 78 departures sailing return from Bordeaux, and a judgment from 1855 that still holds

Measured on 25 August 2026: 74 departures sailing return from Bordeaux, out of 78 in total. She is the only ship we sell on the Garonne and the Gironde.

The classification that never moved

In 1855, Napoleon III asked for a ranking of Bordeaux wines for the Paris Universal Exposition. The city's brokers produced one in a fortnight, simply on the basis of prices paid over the previous century: the dearest growths at the top, the others below. Four first growths were named, then 57 other châteaux across four further ranks.

The document was meant to serve once. It still governs the market today. A single change has been made in 170 years: Mouton Rothschild, a second growth in 1855, became a first in 1973 after fifty years of campaigning by its owner.

A price ranking turned into a quality ranking and frozen by habit — one of the stranger cases in economic history, and it tells very well from a ship's deck.

Europe's largest estuary

The Garonne and the Dordogne meet at the Bec d'Ambès to form the Gironde, about 635 square kilometres, the largest estuary in western Europe. It is tidal along its whole length and as far up as Bordeaux itself: the current reverses twice a day, and the level moves by several metres.

You can see it alongside. A ship berthed at Bordeaux visibly rises and falls through the day, and the timing of calls follows the tide rather than the convenience of the programme.

The hull: a Longship, 190 berths

135 metres, 190 guests, 53 crew, 95 staterooms: 25 Standard, 22 French Balcony, 39 Veranda, 7 Veranda Suites and 2 Explorer Suites. One crew member for every 3.58 guests, a ratio belonging to the Longship class — it does not hold across the rest of Viking's river fleet, where it falls to 1.71 on the Nile.

On the Seine, Viking Fjorgyn offers the other great French round trip with 158 departures, and Viking Kari 193.

Forseti, god of justice

Forseti sits in a hall with pillars of gold and a roof of silver, and the texts say nobody leaves it without their dispute settled. His name means literally "the one who presides", and it gave modern Icelandic the word for the president of the republic.

For the ship serving Bordeaux and its 1855 classification, the name fits rather well.

Getting there from Montreal

Bordeaux receives no direct flight from Montreal: a connection through Paris, Amsterdam or London, then a short hop. The high-speed train from Paris takes about two hours. On the Rhône, Viking Heimdal offers 206 departures, the fullest calendar in our Viking catalogue.

What happens when you book with us

First a fact you can verify in 30 seconds: from a Quebec address, Viking's reservations site does not answer and sends you to a page inviting you to contact an agent. The agency is not an added intermediary, it is the only route open.

Then a method. A Viking River Cruises advisor confirms in writing the exact fare, what the package covers and what it does not, before any deposit. That is what Quebec consumer protection rules require, and we participate in the compensation fund for travel agency customers.
