A round trip from Paris, and what that changes
On almost every European river you board in one city and disembark in another, several hundred kilometres away. On the Seine the dominant formula is the round trip: you leave from Paris and come back to it.
Three practical consequences, and they weigh heavily.
The air ticket is a plain return Montreal-Paris, on a direct flight, with no open-jaw arrangement and no overland transfer between two airports. The extra hotel night, before or after, is taken in the same city as embarkation. And the ship lies in the heart of Paris, which means you can go out walking in the evening and come back to sleep on board.
It is the easiest river itinerary to organise from Quebec, by a wide margin.
What you see from the deck
Paris looks different from the water. The Seine cuts the city in two and most of its monuments face it: the Île de la Cité, the Louvre, the Musée d'Orsay in its former railway station, the Eiffel Tower. The ship then runs down towards Rouen and the estuary, with chalk cliffs and Norman villages on either side. The landing beaches of 6 June 1944, including the Canadian sector at Juno Beach and its 14,000 men, lie an hour by road from several calls: Viking Heimdal for its part serves the Rhône, the other end of the combined route.
The hull: Seine class, 168 berths
She is not a Longship. The Seine ships measure 125 metres, carry 168 guests and 46 crew, and hold 84 staterooms. Twenty-two berths fewer than a Longship, on a shorter hull, because the locks and bridges of the Seine impose different limits from the Rhine's.
One crew member for every 3.65 guests: that is this class's ratio, and it does not hold across the whole river fleet. On Viking's Nile ships it falls to 1.71.

Fjörgyn, the earth
Fjörgyn is Thor's mother and a personification of the earth. The skalds also call her Jörð. Hers is one of the few names in the fleet that designates not a character but an element: the ground itself, of which the god of thunder is the son.
