Viking Magni: 40 departures, and the third of the trip nobody talks about

Measured on 25 August 2026: 40 departures, of which 10 from Amsterdam to Budapest and 9 from Budapest to Amsterdam.

The Main, between two celebrities

On the full crossing of Europe, everyone sells the Rhine and the Danube. Between them lie four or five days of the Main, and it is probably the best part of the trip.

Würzburg first, where the Prince-Bishops' Residence holds the largest unbroken painted ceiling in the world, made by Tiepolo between 1750 and 1753. The staircase has no supporting pillar: when the bombing of 1945 destroyed the city, the vault held.

Then Bamberg, built on seven hills and miraculously spared by the war, its entire centre a World Heritage site. They brew a smoked beer there, Rauchbier, whose malt is dried over beechwood: it tastes of ham and divides people sharply.

Many itineraries also offer an excursion to Rothenburg ob der Tauber, a medieval town intact inside its walls, an hour by road from the river.

What that says about the route

The fifteen-day crossing does not sell on its ends, which can each be done separately in a week. It sells on the middle, which exists on no other format.

A 135-metre hull, like the other forty-nine

The ship holds 95 staterooms for 190 guests and 53 crew. The split is fixed from one Longship to the next: 25 Standard, 22 French Balcony, 39 Veranda, 7 Veranda Suites and 2 Explorer Suites.

The ratio of 3.58 guests per crew member belongs to this class. On Viking's Nile ships it falls to 1.71, and two of them carry more crew than travellers.

Viking Gefjon makes the same crossing with 76 departures, and Viking Vidar with 59.

Magni, stronger than his father at three days old

Thor, having killed the giant Hrungnir, finds himself pinned under the corpse's leg, and no Æsir can lift it. His son Magni, three days old, moves it with one hand and says aloud that he regrets not arriving sooner: he would have killed the giant bare-handed.
