Viking Gefjon: 76 departures, 29 of them on the full crossing of Europe
Measured on 25 August 2026: 15 departures from Budapest to Amsterdam, 14 from Amsterdam to Budapest and 10 return sailings on the tulip route, out of 76 in total.
Fifteen days, five countries, one suitcase to unpack
The Amsterdam-Budapest crossing is the longest river route in Europe. It links the North Sea to Hungary across the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Slovakia and Hungary, by way of the Rhine, the Main, the Main-Danube Canal and the Danube.
What makes it particular is not the distance but the absence of logistics. An equivalent land tour would demand eight or nine different hotels, as many days lost to transfers and check-ins, and a suitcase repacked each time. Here you unpack once.
The format does not suit everyone, and that is better said. Two weeks on 135 metres with the same 190 people asks something of a temperament. Anyone who needs a change of scene every three days will find the tenth day long. Anyone who hates packing will find it perfect.
The ten tulip departures
The ship also gives part of her calendar to the Dutch bulb route, sailing return from Amsterdam between late March and mid-May. That is an entirely different trip: short, flat, concentrated on the Netherlands and Belgium. One ship, two unrelated products.
The hull, in figures
Length 135 metres, capacity 190 guests, crew 53, 95 staterooms split into 25 Standard, 22 French Balcony, 39 Veranda, 7 Veranda Suites and 2 Explorer Suites. The length is not a choice: it is what the locks accept.
The crew ratio, 3.58 guests per crew member, belongs to this class alone. On the Nile, the same company falls to 1.71.

Gefjon, who ploughed away an island
The king of Sweden promises Gefjon as much land as she can plough in one night. She turns her four sons into oxen, tears the piece free and drags it to the sea: it becomes the island of Zealand, where Copenhagen stands. The hole left behind is said to be Lake Mälaren.
Getting there from Montreal
Amsterdam is served by direct flights from Montreal, which simplifies the outbound leg. Budapest requires a connection. Viking Baldur completes the series with 28 departures.
