Viking Vili: 37 departures, and the lead time you actually need
Measured on 25 August 2026: 37 departures, of which 9 from Budapest to Amsterdam and 9 from Amsterdam to Budapest. Perfect symmetry between the two directions, on one of the smallest calendars in the fleet.
How far ahead
The honest answer depends on what matters most to you, and it changes completely with that answer.
If your dates are flexible within a few weeks, you will almost always find something. If your week is imposed — a retirement, an anniversary, a partner's availability — you need to look early, because 37 departures spread over nine months average one date a week, and not always the one you want.
If on top of that you want a particular category, it tightens further. A Longship has only 7 Veranda Suites and 2 Explorer Suites: nine staterooms out of 95. On any given departure those nine go first and do not come back.
The advice that holds: decide first what is negotiable among date, direction and category. One of those three has to be able to move. When all three are fixed in advance, the search is long.
A word on cancellation
Cancellation terms depend on the notice period, the fare chosen and the insurance taken. They cannot be guessed and they vary from one departure to another: have the schedule given to you in writing before you pay a deposit, not after.
What 190 berths mean
One hundred and ninety guests over 135 metres, served by 53 crew, in 95 staterooms: 25 Standard, 22 French Balcony, 39 Veranda, 7 Veranda Suites and 2 Explorer Suites. No stateroom sits more than 60 metres from the dining room.
One crew member for every 3.58 guests: that is the Longship-class figure, and it does not generalise to the rest of the river fleet.

Vili, who gives the will
Vili is one of three brothers, with Odin and Vé, who create the world from the body of the giant Ymir. To the two washed-up trunks that become the first humans he gives intelligence and movement — the will to act, literally, since his name means "will".

Amsterdam on a direct flight, Budapest on a connection. Viking Ve, named after his brother, covers the same route with 71 departures.

Viking's reservations site does not serve Quebec addresses: it redirects to a page stating it is unavailable and suggesting you go through an agent. The check takes 30 seconds and is better done than taken on trust.
