River cruising is slow, and that is the point
A river ship makes about twenty kilometres an hour at most, and far less as soon as it approaches a lock. On a Basel-Amsterdam route you clear a good dozen of them, each demanding twenty to forty minutes of waiting, manoeuvring and filling.
An ocean ship crosses the Atlantic at more than double that speed. By that measure a lock looks like wasted time. Except that it is not: it is the only place on the trip where you see, from close up, how an engineered river works, a few metres from a wet concrete wall rising or falling, and many passengers make it their sharpest memory.
That is what really sets river cruising apart: you are not going from one point to another, you are watching the journey. Anyone looking to cover distance will be disappointed; anyone looking to leave their suitcase unpacked for eight days while crossing four countries will be well served.

Þjálfi, the fastest, and beaten anyway
Þjálfi is Thor's servant and the fastest runner in the Norse world. At the hall of the giant Útgarða-Loki he challenges an opponent named Hugi and loses three races in a row. He is told afterwards that Hugi was thought itself, against which no pair of legs can do anything.

Getting there from Montreal
A connection outbound to Basel, returning from Amsterdam on a direct flight: the open-jaw ticket is planned at the time of booking. Viking Alruna and her 68 departures are the closest alternative.
