The problem 135 metres of ship has to solve
On the Rhine, between Basel and Amsterdam, a ship passes under dozens of bridges, some predating modern navigation. Available air draught changes with the water level, sometimes by several metres within weeks.
The yards' answer is mechanical and visible to the naked eye: the wheelhouse lowers into the deck, the mast folds down, the sun deck railings collapse, and the captain then steers standing in a reduced position. When you see staff taking down parasols and lowering loungers without explanation, a bridge is coming.
It is not folklore. It is what lets a 190-berth hull move through a network built for nineteenth-century barges, and it is also why the sun deck can close without notice for an hour or two.
The offset corridor
The series' other invention is less visible: the stateroom corridor does not run down the centre of the ship but is offset to one side, on a diagonal. That layout frees enough width at one end to fit two Explorer Suites, impossible to place in a symmetrical plan.
The 95 staterooms divide as follows: 25 Standard, 22 French Balcony, 39 Veranda, 7 Veranda Suites and 2 Explorer Suites, for 190 guests and 53 crew. One crew member for every 3.58 guests, a ratio belonging to the Longship class.
Alruna, the seeress
Tacitus mentions, in the first century, a Germanic prophetess named Albruna, honoured by her people. Almost nothing is known about her, and that is what makes the name interesting: it belongs to a real woman of whom history kept a single line.
