Regensburg, and why it matters

Regensburg is the furthest upstream German gateway on a Danube navigable by a 135-metre ship. Its medieval centre is a World Heritage site, its stone bridge dates from the twelfth century, and the city came through the war undestroyed — rare in Bavaria, and immediately visible in the streets.

Practically: an hour by road from Munich airport, against an hour and a half for Passau, the gateway worked by Viking Vilhjalm and her sisters. If you arrive the day before with jet lag in your bones, the difference is not nothing.

Var, goddess of oaths

Var watches over promises exchanged between people and punishes those who break them. The choice of name commits nobody to anything, but it says a great deal about how Viking built its nomenclature: fifty identical hulls, fifty figures from the Norse pantheon, and nothing else to tell them apart.

The hull: a Longship, 190 berths

She belongs to the Longship series, the most common hull in Viking's river fleet: 135 metres long, 190 guests, 53 crew, 95 staterooms split into 25 Standard, 22 French Balcony, 39 Veranda, 7 Veranda Suites and 2 Explorer Suites.

One crew member for every 3.58 guests is thin compared with an ocean ship. The closeness passengers describe does not come from service density: it comes from there being a hundred and ninety of you, from crossing paths at breakfast, and from faces having names by the third day.
