Viking Mississippi: 135 departures, and the only Viking ship you reach without crossing the Atlantic
Measured on 25 August 2026: 31 departures from New Orleans to Memphis and 30 from Memphis to New Orleans, out of 135 in total.
A ship unlike the others
This has to be said at the outset, because the confusion is easy. She carries 386 guests and 147 crew, in 193 staterooms. That is twice the capacity of a European Longship.
The reason is physical: the Mississippi is wide, deep, and has no locks on its lower reaches. Nothing therefore forces a 135-metre, 190-berth hull. The ship is taller and broader, with several stateroom decks and public spaces that do not exist on a Longship.
One crew member for every 2.63 guests, which is denser than a Longship. But the atmosphere on board is not the same: 386 people is no longer a village, it is a small floating hotel. A client who loved the closeness of a Longship should know that before booking.
What the river gives you
From New Orleans to Memphis you climb the Deep South: the Louisiana plantations, Natchez and its antebellum architecture, Vicksburg and its battlefield, the Mississippi Delta where the blues was born, then Memphis and Beale Street. It is a route through American history as much as landscape, and it is not approached as a postcard. The siege of Vicksburg lasted 47 days in 1863 and its surrender, on 4 July, cut the Confederacy in two; Natchez, spared by the war, keeps more than 500 buildings predating 1861.
The argument that matters from Montreal
No transatlantic flight. New Orleans and Memphis are reached on one connection from Montreal, often through Toronto, Chicago, Atlanta or Dallas, in half a day rather than overnight. No significant time change: one hour behind Montreal. For a first river trip, or for anyone who tolerates long flights badly, that is a real argument.
