A published criticism, and what it is worth

The Avalon Impression left the Den Breejen yard in 2014, alongside her twin the Avalon Illumination. One hundred and thirty-five metres, 83 staterooms, 166 travellers, a lift serving the cabin decks and public rooms. Refurbished in 2025.

One published review of this ship deserves quoting rather than ignoring: the dining room tables were judged so close together that eating without joining the neighbours' conversation became difficult. That is the flip side of a single seated service in a single room, on a hull that has to seat one hundred and sixty-six people at once.

If you want privacy at meals, tell us: on this fleet the answer lies not in choosing a ship, since they are all built the same, but in choosing the hour and the table.

Where she sails

The official page names no river. The 2026 calendar shows her on the Danube, between Prague, Vilshofen, Vienna, Nuremberg and Budapest, and on longer routes linking Amsterdam to Budapest by the Rhine and the Main.

The other ships in the fleet

The Avalon Illumination is her exact twin, delivered the same year, and runs down to the lower Danube. The Avalon Vista and the Avalon Expression belong to the same series. The Avalon Visionary is a shorter hull assigned to the Danube and the Main.

The fare, line by line

Included: the stateroom, every meal aboard, wine and beer at lunch and dinner, sparkling wine in the morning, the lounge's all-day self-service, a daily happy hour, guided excursions in each port, and use of the bicycles on the European ships.

Not included: air travel, gratuities, optional excursions and the spa. On gratuities, be careful. The contract leaves them to your discretion. Promotional offers cover them on chosen departures, never across a whole season: an agency page that presents them as a standing feature of the line is wrong, and you would find out when the invoice arrives.

Included excursions come at three effort levels. Active means walking a long time, often uphill and on cobbles. Classic exists for good reasons and nobody will judge you for taking it. You choose the evening before, port by port, which leaves time to read the weather and your own legs.

Satellite Wi-Fi is provided in Europe with no contractual service commitment. The link drops under bridges, inside locks and in closed valleys.

What the glass wall does, and what it does not

Across two full decks, the stateroom opens through a full-height glass panel more than three metres wide that slides back about two. A second pane rises from the floor as a guardrail. The bed looks at the river. The line calls this an open-air balcony; a specialist in the trade describes it more accurately as a French balcony at large scale, and that description is the right one.

In practice you gain air, sound and light across the full width of the room, and a view from the bed that few competitors offer. You lose private outdoor space. To take a coffee outside you climb to the sun deck, which is shared. A traveller attached to a personal patch of terrace should know that before booking, not after.

The lower-deck stateroom is a different category rather than a smaller version of the same thing: two fixed windows high on the wall, which do not open. It costs less for exactly that reason.

The rest of life aboard is quickly told. Shower only, no bathtub. European outlets, so bring an adapter. A lift serves the cabin decks and the public rooms, never the sun deck, which is reached by stairs.

Leaving from Quebec

This trip really starts at the airport, and the flight is not part of the cruise fare. Depending on the embarkation city and the season, the trip from Montreal is either direct or routed through one European connection.

One simple rule, learned the hard way: arrive at least a day before embarkation. Jet lag does not clear in a few hours, and a late bag needs a day to catch up with you. On the way home, keep the day free.

We put the flight, the cruise, the hotel nights, the transfers and the insurance into one file, with the protection of Quebec's compensation fund for travel agency customers. Tell us about the trip before you pick the date.

Frequently Asked Questions

A published review says so, and we would rather quote it than hide it. Service is seated, in one room, for one hundred and sixty-six travellers. Choosing an off-peak hour or an end table changes the experience a great deal.
In 2014, at the Den Breejen yard in the Netherlands, the same year as her twin the Avalon Illumination. She measures one hundred and thirty-five metres and has eighty-three staterooms.
The line does not name them on her page. The 2026 calendar places her on the Danube, between Prague, Vilshofen, Vienna and Budapest, and on Amsterdam-Budapest routes using the Rhine and the Main.
Yes, one, serving the cabin decks and the public rooms. It does not reach the sun deck, which stays accessible by stairs, on this ship as across the European fleet.
The name the line gives its sliding glass wall. It opens the stateroom by about two metres, behind a second glazed panel serving as a guardrail. No outdoor space exists: you stay inside.
No. They have two fixed windows set high on the wall, level with the water, that do not open. Neither air nor sound comes in. It is a different category, and that is why it costs less.
Yes, in 2025: public-room interiors, a re-equipped fitness room, a second satellite antenna and extra bicycles, including electric-assist models.
Around forty, for one hundred and sixty-six travellers. That is the usual complement on this line's 135-metre hulls, and it explains the format of restaurant service.
No. The line's terms exclude them and call them discretionary. A seasonal offer may cover them on chosen departures, which does not make them a permanent inclusion.
Because it is the only margin that absorbs a delayed flight or a lost bag. A river ship does not wait for you, and catching up with a missed departure costs more than a hotel night.
It is provided aboard in Europe with no service commitment. The line's terms even place it among items supplied separately and without guarantee. The link weakens in locks.
One included excursion per port, chosen among three families: classic visit, hands-on immersion, or active outing. The choice is made the evening before and only one format is possible per port.
The line offers none. Its terms require you to walk and to manage steps and ramps without a wheelchair or walker outside the United States. River quays and side-by-side moorings make the constraint worse.
Not indoors. Interior spaces are entirely non-smoking and one outdoor area is designated per ship, usually on the sun deck, away from the loungers.
It applies in the situations set out in Quebec's travel agents legislation, notably a supplier's insolvency. The cover has defined limits and does not replace travel insurance.
