The real reason for the shutdown, and the one everyone repeats

The line no longer publishes cruises on the Irrawaddy. It announced the cancellation of its Burmese season as early as April 2018, and the reason it gave at the time is explicit: traveller interest in the destination had waned. The line even specified that the decision was not based on safety or security issues.

That matters, because the version in circulation attributes the shutdown to the coup of February 2021. Chronology makes that explanation false: the decision came three years earlier. The media context of the time was heavy, the line cited demand, and we report what it said rather than what gets repeated.

    What this ship was

Sixty-one metres, eighteen suites, thirty-six travellers, three decks. Entered service in 2015. The programme was run in partnership with a Burmese shipowner: the hull did not belong to the line, which marketed her inside combined tours of fourteen to nineteen days out of Yangon or Bangkok.

Each suite opened through floor-to-ceiling glass doors. Wi-Fi was available only in the panorama lounge and the signal was judged unreliable. Current ran at 220 volts. Navigation on the Irrawaddy depended on the water level, a structural constraint of the river.

The fate of the hull after the programme ended is documented nowhere: sold, returned to her owner, laid up, no serious source says.

The active ships in the fleet

The Avalon Saigon holds the Mekong and remains the line's only Asian ship. The Delfin III sails the Peruvian Amazon. The MS Farah holds the Nile. The Avalon Passion is a European hull.

    Arranging this trip from Quebec

The flight to Europe or to the destination is not included in the cruise fare. From Montreal the connection is direct to several cities in season, and routed through one connection the rest of the year or for the far destinations.

Plan one night ahead before embarkation, two if the time difference is large. That margin is used exactly once, but on that day it saves the trip. Keep the return day free as well.

We build the complete file, flight, cruise, hotels, transfers, insurance, under the protection of Quebec's compensation fund for travel agency customers. One call is enough to check what the season really allows.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Not with this line. It has published no Burmese cruises since the cancellation of its 2019 season, announced as early as April 2018. The ship no longer appears in its fleet.
No, and chronology proves it. The decision dates from April 2018, three years earlier. The line cited a decline in traveller interest and specified that safety was not the issue.
A Burmese shipowner. The line ran the programme in partnership and marketed the hull without owning her, as it does for its other distant destinations.
No serious source documents it. Sold, returned to her owner, laid up, nobody knows. We would rather say so than repeat a guess found on a forum.
Sixty-one metres, eighteen suites in two categories, thirty-six travellers, three decks. Entered service in 2015. Each suite opened through floor-to-ceiling glass doors.
Only in the panorama lounge, and the signal was judged unreliable by reviews published at the time. That was a constraint of the local network as much as of the ship.
As a combined tour of fourteen to nineteen days out of Yangon or Bangkok, with guided excursions and onboard talks. The cruise was never sold on its own.
Yes, it is a structural constraint of the Irrawaddy. Water level governs access and the real length of the navigable route, independently of the ship or the line.
Because travellers still search this name, often after seeing an old brochure. Explaining what happened is worth more than a page that cannot be found.
The Mekong, with the Avalon Saigon, between Vietnam and Cambodia. She is the only Asian ship the line still markets in 2026, and her calendar runs into 2027.
The Burmese market contracted sharply after 2018 and the country's situation has moved on since. Write to us before planning anything: we will check the real state of the offer and the travel advisories.
Nothing documents one, and on a sixty-one-metre hull with three decks the assumption has to be no. Movement between decks was by stairs.
The contractual detail of this programme is no longer available on an up-to-date official page. On all the line's current destinations, gratuities remain the traveller's responsibility.
We tell you. Better to hear that a route no longer exists than to book something that does not resemble what you pictured. We would then suggest an alternative or another season.
Yes, as soon as the booking is made here. Licence, trust account and compensation fund apply whatever country the ship sails in and whatever flag she carries.
