In Darwin Bay, which is to say inside the old crater itself. The ship enters the caldera through a breach in the volcanic wall: it is one of very few places on earth where you drop anchor inside a volcano.
Because thousands of birds are wheeling over the bay before the anchor even touches bottom. Red-footed boobies, Nazca boobies, swallow-tailed gulls, frigatebirds and storm petrels nest in dense colonies on the cliffs and along the trails.
Darwin Bay beach, a wet landing on white coral, and Prince Philip's Steps, a dry landing. Both are by zodiac, under the supervision of a national park guide.
About eight hundred metres through the mangroves, in a density of birds that is hard to convey. Nests line the trail, sometimes at knee height: you move slowly, speaking softly, under the indifferent gaze of the residents.
A natural staircase cut into the cliff, named for Prince Philip, who visited the archipelago twice. The climb of roughly twenty-five metres opens onto a wind-swept lava plateau where storm petrels swirl by the tens of thousands.
It is the most sought-after sighting on the plateau, but it takes luck. This raptor hunts in broad daylight, posted near the crevices where the petrels pass. Guides know its perches and can spot it without disturbing it.
Yes, along the caldera walls in sheltered water. Tropical fish, playful sea lions and rays pass through water cooler than you would expect on the equator. Some snorkellers glimpse hammerhead sharks, fleeting shapes at the edge of the blue.
None. No village, no pier, no road. The island is visited only on an expedition cruise supervised by the national park, in small groups.
Late afternoon on Prince Philip's Steps, when the light rakes across the plateau and the flights return to the nests. That is when the finest images are made.
Closed shoes for the lava, sun protection and a well-charged camera. The plateau is windy and shadeless, and the Darwin Bay trail crosses uneven ground.
