On the left bank of the Danube, facing the Bulgarian city of Ruse, Giurgiu lives to the river's rhythm since Genoese merchants established a trading post here in the 14th century. River boats moor steps from the centre, in a modest city that does not seek to dazzle: it offers instead a gateway, that to Romania and its capital, Bucharest, some 60 kilometres north. The stop is usually brief, but well spent, it opens two countries at once.

A Border Town

Giurgiu was long a stronghold contested between the Ottoman Empire and Romanian principalities. From this turbulent history remains the clock tower, built in the Ottoman era at the centre of the main square. Rising some 20 metres, it once served as a watchtower before becoming the city's symbol. Around it, streets mix pre-war buildings, communist-era façades and small shops without tourist veneer.

The Bridge of Friendship

Downstream, a steel structure over two kilometres long spans the river: the Bridge of Friendship, inaugurated in 1954, the first fixed link between Romania and Bulgaria. Road and rail pass on two levels. From the dock, you measure the scale of traffic crossing southeastern Europe here, trucks and freight convoys parading above the waters. Anglers settle at dawn on the rock embankments, under the willows of the bank. Ruse, on the other shore, reveals its Belle Époque buildings; certain cruise itineraries visit it from this bank, a chance to compare two worlds the river both separates and joins.

Bucharest Within Reach of the Port Call

Most passengers use the stop to reach Bucharest, roughly an hour and a quarter's drive away. Guides punctuate the journey with anecdotes on Wallachian countryside, wheat and sunflower fields passing the coach window. Romania's capital reserves striking contrasts: the Parliament Palace, one of the world's vastest buildings, neighbours tiny Orthodox churches and the villas of old Bucharest, which once earned it the nickname Little Paris of the Balkans. The pedestrian old centre brims with cafés and bookshops set in restored covered passages.

Strolling the Riverbank

For those who stay, Giurgiu reveals itself without haste. The marina and landscaped banks invite a stroll facing barge convoys. The county museum displays the region's past, from ancient remains to Ottoman-era witnesses. At the market, stalls overflow with vegetables, fresh cheeses and honey from the Wallachian plains: a direct glimpse of daily life in southern Romania, far from tourist circuits. You leave willingly with a jar of honey at the bottom of your bag.

Port-Call Essentials

Giurgiu belongs to that family of river ports that present themselves for what they are: working towns, shaped by the passage of goods and empires. You understand the Danube better here than in many celebrated places, precisely because nothing is staged. And when the ship casts off, the Ottoman tower still keeps watch over the square, as it has for more than two centuries. Few ports offer, in a single day, such a clear glimpse of two shores and two histories.
