Viking Helgrim: 145 departures, and why the choice of ship changes nothing on the Douro
Measured on 25 August 2026: 70 departures sailing return from Porto-Leixões and 41 return in Portugal, out of 145 in total.
Four ships, four twin calendars
Better said plainly, because it saves everyone time. We sell four Viking ships on the Douro: Helgrim with 145 departures, Osfrid with 144, Hemming and Torgil with 143 each. They share the same itineraries, the same hull and the same capacity.
Two departures on two different dates therefore differ only by the date. An advisor who has you hesitating between Helgrim and Torgil is wasting your time: the only useful question is which week you can travel.
That is true elsewhere in the fleet too, but nowhere as starkly: on the Rhine or the Danube, calendars differ enough that the choice of ship has real consequences for available dates.
Porto, before or after
The city fills a full day and earns the extra hotel night. The Ribeira quarter, on the bank, has been a World Heritage site since 1996. The double-decked Dom Luís I bridge was built in 1886 by Théophile Seyrig, an associate of Gustave Eiffel — Eiffel's own bridge, the Maria Pia, stands upstream.
The port lodges are on the opposite bank, at Vila Nova de Gaia, reached on foot across the bridge's upper deck.
The hull: Douro class, 106 berths
She is not a Longship. The Douro ships measure about 80 metres and carry 106 guests and 33 crew. One crew member for every 3.21 guests, a ratio belonging to this class.
The constraint comes from the river's locks, which accept nothing longer. The result is the most intimate format in Viking's European river fleet.
Viking Hemming, Viking Torgil and Viking Osfrid complete the series.
Helgrim, the sacred mask
The name joins heilagr, holy, and grímr, mask or helm — and by extension, in skaldic verse, one who goes disguised. Grímr is in fact one of the many names Odin gives himself when travelling incognito.
Getting there from Montreal
Porto requires a connection, often through Lisbon, London or Frankfurt. Lisbon is linked to Montreal by seasonal direct flights.
What happens when you book with us
First a fact you can verify in 30 seconds: from a Quebec address, Viking's reservations site does not answer and sends you to a page inviting you to contact an agent. The agency is not an added intermediary, it is the only route open.
Then a method. A Viking River Cruises advisor confirms in writing the exact fare, what the package covers and what it does not, before any deposit. That is what Quebec consumer protection rules require, and we participate in the compensation fund for travel agency customers.
