Viking Torgil: 143 departures, and the wine invented to survive the journey
Measured on 25 August 2026: 73 departures sailing return in Portugal and 70 return from Porto-Leixões, out of 143 in total. The calendar matches Viking Hemming's exactly, to the date.
Why port is fortified
Port was not invented to be good. It was invented to keep.
In the seventeenth century, England at war with France looked for a substitute wine. Portugal supplied one, but it travelled badly in cask to London. Grape spirit was added, halting fermentation before all the sugar turned to alcohol. The wine became both stronger and sweeter, and it arrived intact.
The method stayed. That is why port comes in around 20 degrees of alcohol instead of 13, and why it is sweet: the remaining sugar is what fermentation never had time to consume.
The Methuen Treaty, signed in 1703, sealed it: Portuguese wines entered England at reduced duty in exchange for equivalent treatment of English cloth. By 1750, Portugal supplied close to half the wine imported across the Channel. A national taste was built on a trade agreement.
Ruby, tawny, vintage
Ruby ages briefly and in large vessels, which keeps it red and fruity. Tawny ages long in small casks, where it oxidises slowly, loses colour and gains notes of nut and caramel. Vintage is declared only in years judged good enough, about three times a decade, and it ages in bottle.
The lodges where all this sleeps are not in Porto but opposite it, at Vila Nova de Gaia, on the other bank. Getting that wrong irritates local people.
On board, wine accompanies lunch and dinner; exactly what is poured varies by itinerary and is confirmed in writing before departure.
The hull: Douro class, 106 berths
She is not a Longship. The Douro ships measure about 80 metres and carry 106 guests and 33 crew. That is 84 berths fewer than a Rhine Longship, on a hull almost half as long.
The constraint comes from the river's locks, which accept nothing longer. The result, from a guest's point of view, is the most intimate format in Viking's entire European river fleet: one crew member for every 3.21 guests, and a lounge where you end up knowing everyone.

Torgil, Thor's hostage
Þorgísl is a compound name: Þórr, the god, and gísl, hostage or pledge. It was common in medieval Iceland and Norway, borne by several figures in the sagas.
Getting there from Montreal
Porto requires a connection, often through Lisbon, London or Frankfurt. Viking Helgrim completes the series with 145 departures.
