Viking Hemming: 143 departures on the world's oldest demarcated wine region

Measured on 25 August 2026: 73 departures sailing return in Portugal and 70 return from Porto-Leixões, out of 143 in total.

1756, and why that date matters

The Marquis of Pombal formally demarcated the Upper Douro region in 1756, with granite markers set in the ground to mark the limits of what could legitimately be called port. It is the first controlled appellation of origin in history, more than a century and a half before the French ones.

The reason was not romantic. The port trade to England had become so lucrative that the wine was being cut with anything to hand, including elderberry for colour. Pombal created a state company, drew a boundary and had the vines outside it torn up.

Terraces built by hand

The valley has been a World Heritage site since 2001. What is listed is not only the landscape: it is the socalcos, terraces held up by schist walls stacked without mortar, built with picks from the seventeenth century onwards on slopes where nothing grew.

Some were rebuilt after the phylloxera of the 1870s, which destroyed the vineyard and left empty terraces still called mortórios. You can pick them out from the ship's deck: perfect walls without a single vine.

The hull: Douro class, 106 berths

She is not a Longship. The Douro ships measure about 80 metres and carry 106 guests and 33 crew. That is 84 berths fewer than a Rhine Longship, on a hull almost half as long.

The constraint comes from the river's locks, which accept nothing longer. The result, from a guest's point of view, is the most intimate format in Viking's entire European river fleet: one crew member for every 3.21 guests, and a lounge where you end up knowing everyone.

Viking Torgil offers exactly the same number of departures, and Viking Osfrid one more.

Hemming, the name without a god

Hemming is not a deity but a man's name, borne by Danish chieftains and kings in the ninth century. On the Douro, Viking named its ships after historical Scandinavian figures rather than mythological ones: it is a separate series within the fleet.

Getting there from Montreal

Lisbon is linked to Montreal by seasonal direct flights; Porto generally requires a connection, often through Lisbon, London or Frankfurt. Allow for the train or the road between Lisbon and Porto if you arrive from the south. Viking Helgrim completes the series on this river with 145 departures.

What happens when you book with us

First a fact you can verify in 30 seconds: from a Quebec address, Viking's reservations site does not answer and sends you to a page inviting you to contact an agent. The agency is not an added intermediary, it is the only route open.

Then a method. A Viking River Cruises advisor confirms in writing the exact fare, what the package covers and what it does not, before any deposit. That is what Quebec consumer protection rules require, and we participate in the compensation fund for travel agency customers.
