Viking Osfrid: 144 departures on a river that, sixty years ago, was not navigable

The Douro was made navigable; it was not
It is the least known fact of the route, and it completely changes how the landscape reads.
Until the middle of the twentieth century the Douro was a torrent choked with rapids and rock, impassable for anything larger than a skiff. Port came down to Porto on rabelos, flat-bottomed square-sailed craft handled by men who knew every passage by heart and who died in them regularly.
Between 1960 and 1985, five dams with locks were built on the Portuguese river. They drowned the rapids, raised the level, and created a continuous navigable waterway of about 210 kilometres to the Spanish border. The calm, wide river you see from the deck has existed only for some sixty years.
The Carrapatelo lock
It lifts the ship about 35 metres in one go, which makes it one of the deepest in Europe. You enter a chamber of wet concrete so high that the sky is visible only by tipping your head back, and it takes some fifteen minutes to rise.
Many passengers make it their sharpest memory of the trip, ahead of the terraces.
The hull: Douro class, 106 berths
She is not a Longship. The Douro ships measure about 80 metres and carry 106 guests and 33 crew. That is 84 berths fewer than a Rhine Longship, on a hull almost half as long.
The constraint comes from the river's locks, which accept nothing longer. The result, from a guest's point of view, is the most intimate format in Viking's entire European river fleet: one crew member for every 3.21 guests, and a lounge where you end up knowing everyone.

Osfrid, the Anglo-Saxon name
Ósfríðr is an Old Norse woman's name built from óss, god, and fríðr, beauty or peace. It appears in both Scandinavian and Anglo-Saxon sources of the Viking age.
