Viking Mani: 76 departures, and European river cruising's one real itinerary risk

38 departures measured from Basel to Amsterdam on 25 August 2026, out of 76 in total.

The river level decides, not the line

An ocean ship endures storms. A river ship endures water height, and that is a risk of a different kind because it lasts weeks rather than hours.

When the Rhine drops too low — as in the summer of 2018 and again in 2022 — some stretches become impassable for a 135-metre hull. When it rises too high, the ship no longer clears the bridges. In either case the line modifies the itinerary: a coach between two cities, a ship swap with a unit positioned beyond the obstacle, or one port of call replaced by another.

This is neither rare nor catastrophic, but it is not a theoretical possibility either. The contract of carriage provides for such modifications and they generally do not give rise to a refund, which is better read before departure. Have that specific clause explained to you before you sign.

When the risk is lowest

Low water arrives in late summer and early autumn, after a dry season. High water comes from snowmelt and spring rain. May, June and late September are statistically the steadiest windows, but no month is immune: 2018 saw record low water in October and November.

The real advice is not to pick a magic month. It is to travel knowing that the published itinerary is an intention rather than a guarantee, and to hold insurance covering committed costs if the trip has to change shape.

What 190 berths mean

One hundred and ninety guests over 135 metres, served by 53 crew, in 95 staterooms: 25 Standard, 22 French Balcony, 39 Veranda, 7 Veranda Suites and 2 Explorer Suites. No stateroom sits more than 60 metres from the dining room.

One crew member for every 3.58 guests: that is the Longship-class figure, and it does not generalise to the rest of the river fleet.

Viking Rolf runs the same route with 86 departures, and Viking Alruna with 68.

Máni, the pursued moon

Máni is the personified moon, driving his chariot across the sky in flight from the wolf Hati. At Ragnarök the wolf finally catches him. It is one of the few mythologies in which the passing of time is explicitly a chase.

Viking Hervor completes the series on this river with 84 departures.

Getting there from Montreal

A connection outbound to Basel, returning from Amsterdam on a direct flight.

Booking: what you need to know

Viking's reservations site does not serve Quebec addresses: it redirects to a page stating it is unavailable and suggesting you go through an agent. The check takes 30 seconds and is better done than taken on trust.

On our side, nothing is booked without writing. Our Viking River Cruises advisors send you the exact fare, the inclusions and exclusions item by item, and the applicable conditions. AquaTerra Travels follows Quebec consumer protection rules and participates in the compensation fund for travel agency customers.

The river level. When the Rhine drops too low, some stretches become impassable for a 135-metre hull; when it rises too high, the ship no longer clears the bridges.
The line modifies the itinerary: a coach between two cities, a ship swap with a unit positioned beyond the obstacle, or one port of call replaced by another.
Generally not. The contract of carriage provides for such modifications. It is a clause to have explained before signing, not discovered on the fourth day.
Late summer and early autumn, after a dry season. The summers of 2018 and 2022 both saw critical levels on the Rhine.
In spring, with snowmelt and rain. The risk then is not grounding but air draught: the ship no longer clears certain bridges.
May, June and late September are statistically the steadiest windows. But no month is immune: 2018 saw record low water in October and November.

53, or one for every 3.58 guests. That is the Longship-class ratio; it falls to 1.71 on Viking's Nile ships.
135 metres, the limit of the Rhine, Main and Danube locks. It is also what makes the ship sensitive to shallow stretches.
