A dry landing, straight onto dark rocks. Small expedition ships and day boats from Santa Cruz drop passengers there before a guided loop of about two and a half kilometres between the interior and the wave-beaten coast.
Because it is not a volcanic cone but a submarine lava platform lifted out of the water by movements of the earth's crust. Hence its almost tabular profile, covered in thorny scrub and silvery palo santo trees that turn fragrant after rain.
The largest frigatebird colony in the archipelago. In display season the males throw back their heads, spread their wings and vibrate their red gular pouch in a low drumming. The whole show happens at eye level, in the shrubs beside the trail.

Yes, they nest metres from the frigatebirds. The courtship runs through the male's whistling, the female's hoarse reply, bowing, and slow lifts of turquoise feet. It is one of the most anticipated moments on the loop.
Yes, large yellow lizards fond of cactus flowers, whose burrows pit the ground along the trail. They descend from animals moved here from Baltra in the 1930s: the species survived here while dying out on its home island, a textbook conservation case.
About an hour and a half for the two-and-a-half-kilometre loop. The island covers less than two square kilometres, yet few islands in the archipelago pack so much visible life so close to the path.
Early morning or late afternoon, when the heat eases and the light gilds the rocks. The island offers no real shade: a hat, water and sturdy shoes are essential.
The only nocturnal gull in the world. Pairs keep watch on the ledges, their large red-rimmed eyes turned seaward. Sea lions doze on the black rocks just below, indifferent to photographers.
