At Puerto Egas, in James Bay on the west coast. Expedition ships anchor offshore and zodiacs bring passengers to a wet landing on the volcanic sand, at the foot of eroded cones.
No. The island remains uninhabited: no port, no village, no lights at night, only lava fields, dark beaches and wildlife that still has not learned to fear people. Every attempt at settlement here failed.
Because it is volcanic. The charcoal tone of the beach always surprises visitors arriving barefoot in the cool water of the landing.
A route of about two and a half kilometres along the shore, over lava sculpted by the ocean. At low tide, the basins carved into the rock become natural aquariums: anemones, urchins, fish trapped until the next tide, bright red crabs scattering over dark stone.
