At the very foot of the cliff, on the rocky headland facing the Bec d'Ambès, where the Dordogne joins the Garonne. A few steps take you from the gangway to the first cobbled lanes.
By the Escalier du Roy, cut into the rock, or by the ramp that curves around the cliff. The climb offers medieval gates, terraced gardens and views over the mingled waters of the estuary.
The quay, the monumental old washhouse with its neoclassical colonnade, and stone facades turned towards the river. The call plays out on two levels, and the lower town is the first.
A peaceful estate surrounded by formal gardens, on the site of the former citadel. Beneath the terraces, old quarries cut into the rock now serve as wine cellars. The site also holds a museum of nineteenth-century carriages and horse-drawn vehicles.
Vines running down towards the Dordogne, the estuary islands stretching offshore and, on a clear day, the port installations of Bordeaux upstream.
The vineyard covering the slopes around the village, planted mainly with merlot and malbec, the historic grape local growers are bringing back. The reds are fleshy and fruity, good with a plate of charcuterie or a piece of canelé.
Several cellars cut beneath the citadel offer tastings a few minutes' walk from the quay. Other estates welcome visitors inland, by excursion.
A site about seven kilometres from Bourg holding prehistoric engravings more than 30,000 years old, among the oldest known cave art in France. Plan it as an excursion: it is not walkable.
Sunday morning on the square, with growers from the region: Gironde cheeses and pâtés. Place de la Libération, lined with plane trees and cafes, is the heart of the village the rest of the week.
There is no spectacular monument here, and it is best to know that before going ashore. What the village offers is a headland, a vineyard, quiet lanes and two thousand years of living to the river's rhythm. You leave calmer than you arrived.
