Seen from the river, the village looks perched on a pedestal of golden limestone: tall houses, a church spire, terraces suspended above the brown water. Bourg-sur-Gironde, known simply as Bourg to locals, sits on a rocky promontory facing the Bec d'Ambès, where the Dordogne meets the Garonne to form the Gironde estuary. River boats dock right at the foot of the cliff; just a few steps take you from the gangway to the first cobblestone lanes.

From the Lower Town to the Upper Town

The port call unfolds on two levels. Below, the dock, the old monumental wash house with its neoclassical colonnade, and stone façades facing the river. Above, the old town, ringed by fortification remains. The two are connected by the Escalier du Roy, carved into the rock, or by the ramp winding around the cliff. The climb holds pleasant surprises: medieval gates, terraced gardens, and views over the estuary's mingled waters, where cargo ships and sailboats glide by.

The Citadel and Its Unusual Museum

At the top, the former citadel has given way to a peaceful estate surrounded by French-style gardens. Beneath the terraces, old quarries carved into the rock now serve as wine cellars for local winegrowers. The site also houses a surprising museum devoted to 19th-century carriages and horse-drawn vehicles, gathered in the outbuildings. From the lookout, the view stretches far: vineyards tumble down toward the Dordogne, the estuary's islands stretch out offshore, and on a clear day, you can make out Bordeaux's port facilities upstream.

Lanes, Markets and an Easy Way of Life

The old quarter is best explored without a map. Place de la Libération, lined with plane trees and cafés, serves as the village's heart; the lanes branching off from it lead to Saint-Géronce church, 18th-century merchants' houses, and the Porte de la Mer, opening onto the river panorama. The whole place breathes a southern French tranquility: pastel shutters, cats dozing on doorsteps, conversations lingering in front of the bakery. Cruise passengers with an extra hour can follow the trail along the cliff to the neighbouring hamlets, past fig trees and stilted fishing huts.

A Vineyard by the Water

You can't understand Bourg without talking about wine. The Côtes de Bourg appellation covers the hillsides surrounding the village, planted mostly with merlot and malbec, a historic grape variety local winegrowers are now bringing back into the spotlight. Several cellars carved beneath the citadel offer tastings just minutes from the dock; other estates welcome visitors farther inland. The reds, full-bodied and fruity, pair wonderfully with a plate of cured meats or a cannelé bought right on the square.

In the Immediate Surroundings

• The Pair-non-Pair cave, about 7 km away, preserves prehistoric engravings more than 30,000 years old, among the oldest known cave art in France.
• The Blaye Citadel, a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Vauban Fortifications network, stands about fifteen kilometres downstream.
• A farmers' market brings the square to life on Sunday mornings, perfect for picking up local Gironde cheeses and pâtés.

When it's time to head back on board, many linger one last time on the upper terrace, a glass of Côtes de Bourg in hand, watching the tide move back up the estuary. This port call, with no showstopping monument, nonetheless leaves a lasting impression: that of a village that has lived to the rhythm of the river for two thousand years, and that takes the time to do things properly. You leave calmer than you arrived.
