Frequently Asked Questions
At the village pontoon, a few steps from the centre, about fifty kilometres east of Porto. Everything is done on foot.
Literally, between the rivers. The Tâmega, coming down from the northern mountains, joins the Douro in an amphitheatre of green hills.
The viewpoint above the meeting of the two rivers, a wander through the village, and an easy walk or bike ride along the banks. Nothing is spectacular, everything is right.
The meeting of the Tâmega and the Douro. Depending on the season the Tâmega arrives clear or heavy with northern rain, and the contact traces shifting patterns on the surface. Benches line the approach.
Late afternoon, when raking light picks out every curve of the hills. Photographers wait for it, and the herons fish at that hour.
A former monastery raised by monks above the river, a short way east, now converted into a hotel and restaurant. It has kept its vaulted rooms and hanging gardens, and its terrace looks down over the Douro.
Both schools. The area marks the transition between vinho verde country to the north and the terraced vineyards beginning upstream: a light, faintly sparkling white on one side, a full-bodied red on the other.
Pão de ló and regional sweets from the village bakeries, farmhouse cheeses from the valley, and a tight bica at the cafe alongside the locals.
Yes, the banks of both rivers suit easy walking and cycling, among willows and cultivated plots.
Village life: small churches, granite houses, cafes where the day gets discussed. It is the quiet charm of the calls on the emerging Douro, where the traveller is still a guest rather than a customer.
