Frequently Asked Questions
Nowhere in town: Siem Reap does not sit on the lake. Depending on water levels, ships anchor offshore or stop further south, and passengers reach land by local boat at the Chong Khneas landing, about twelve kilometres south of the city.
By road transfer. From the Chong Khneas landing it is about twelve kilometres to Siem Reap, then roughly six more north to the archaeological park. In the dry season, when the water recedes, the transfer from the ship is made by coach instead.
A full day lets you see Angkor Wat, the Bayon and Ta Prohm without rushing, with a break for lunch. Half a day forces a choice: in that case, Angkor Wat alone.
The most famous monument in the UNESCO World Heritage archaeological park. Its five lotus-bud towers rise above wide moats, and its bas-relief galleries tell of battles and Hindu legends, carved in the 12th century.
Angkor Thom with its Bayon and dozens of stone faces turned to the four cardinal points, the Terrace of the Elephants, and Ta Prohm, left in the grip of silk-cotton trees whose roots pour down the walls.
As early as possible. Morning light strikes the Angkor Wat causeway head-on, the heat is bearable and the courtyards are quieter. An early start genuinely changes the day.
Shoulders and knees must be covered in the sanctuaries. Add a hat, water and walking shoes: the enclosures are vast and the stonework uneven.
Yes, and there are many well-trained ones. Their presence genuinely changes the value of the day: without the story, the stones stay silent.
Kampong Phluk, about twenty kilometres away, where houses perched on tall wooden stilts stand above water or mud depending on the season. The boat ride through the flooded forest is one of the region's strongest images.
The US dollar serves as everyday currency with Cambodian riel for small change; central hotels and restaurants take cards. Khmer is the language, with English widely spoken in tourism.
