Frequently Asked Questions
At the river landing built in 2018 on the edge of the village, able to take vessels up to 135 metres. It is a few minutes' walk from the centre. No terminal, no shuttle: you step off the gangway and into the lanes.
Yes, the whole village is walkable, castle and kitchen garden included. That is the appeal of this call: few river stops pack so much history into such a small area. The only demanding climb is the keep.
The castle set against the cliff, the secret passage up to the keep, then the walled kitchen garden below already fill a good half-day. Add a stroll along the riverbank or the main street. Trying to add Giverny cuts into everything else.
It is the only village in the Paris region listed among the Plus Beaux Villages de France. A white chalk cliff pierced with cavities follows the Seine's meander and holds a cluster of roofs at its foot, with a medieval keep on top for more than eight centuries.
The residence of the dukes of La Rochefoucauld, rebuilt in the 18th century and literally leaning against the cliff: the drawing rooms open onto the Seine while the back rooms burrow into the rock. A hundred-metre passage cut through the chalk links the lower halls to the keep built around 1190 for Philippe Auguste.
It takes some breath: this is a stairway cut into chalk, not a stroll. Anyone with limited mobility should stay with the state rooms and the garden, which are worth the visit on their own. From the top the whole valley opens up, with its wooded islands and Vexin slopes.
Yes, and freely. Its 3.8 hectares make it the largest kitchen and fruit garden in the Paris region after Versailles: four large squares divided into thirty-two plots, edged by some 675 fruit trees, laid out in the 18th century. The gardeners work without pesticides and the harvest is sometimes sold on site.
Yes. In February 1944 Field Marshal Rommel set up his headquarters on the estate. The bunkers dug by the occupying forces can still be visited, steps away from the state rooms — a contrast most visitors find striking.
Yes, Monet's gardens are about fifteen minutes away by coach and several itineraries offer the excursion. Be aware that Giverny easily fills half a day: those who go see little of the village. Staying put is not a lesser choice.
The euro, with cards accepted at the château, the garden and local shops. The language is French; the château provides English material, but the village itself is very much French-speaking. Keep a few coins for the 19th-century covered market.
