Frequently Asked Questions
Near the Neckar, about fifteen minutes walk from the grid centre. The baroque palace is roughly twenty minutes on foot from the quay.
Because the centre follows a grid plan laid out in the seventeenth century. Addresses are written with a letter and a number: C1, Q7, N2. Disorienting for five minutes, then remarkably efficient: you cannot get lost.
The baroque palace, a walk across the grid to Friedrichsplatz and its water tower, then a break at the Marktplatz. Anyone drawn to machinery should add the Technoseum.
Yes. Some of the state rooms are open, including the monumental staircase and restored galleries, and the main courtyard is freely accessible. The rest of the building houses the University of Mannheim, which gives the place an energy unusual for a palace.
A monumental pink sandstone reservoir crowned by a dome, the city emblem, at the centre of Friedrichsplatz. Pools, pergolas and flower beds surround it in a very 1900 composition, lit at night.
Yes. Karl Benz drove his motorised tricycle here in 1886, regarded as the first automobile, and Baron Karl von Drais rode his running machine, ancestor of the bicycle, here in 1817. The Technoseum tells both stories with working machines.
Not necessarily, but be realistic about time. Heidelberg is about twenty kilometres away and the excursion takes half a day. Mannheim lacks its neighbour romantic skyline and does not try to imitate it: this is a city that works, invents and rebuilds.
Yes. The Technoseum and its demonstrations appeal strongly to children, Friedrichsplatz offers open space, and the grid makes navigating simple even with young walkers.
The euro. Cards work in shops, museums and brasseries, but keep cash for the Marktplatz market and small counters.
May to September, when the grid terraces are outdoors and Friedrichsplatz is at its best late in the day. The Marktplatz market runs several mornings a week, worth checking before going ashore.
