Right in the centre. The Svolvær pier, on Austvågøya island, opens straight onto town. Larger ships anchor in the roadstead and tender passengers to the same spot, five minutes from everything.
The Svolvær goat, a granite peak whose two horns stand out above the houses. It remains the preserve of experienced climbers: the boldest keep up the tradition of jumping from one horn to the other. Everyone else admires it from ground level.
The signature outing is the Trollfjord safari, two to three hours from the quays. Otherwise, wander the basin and the rorbuer, then spend half a day in Kabelvåg about ten minutes away by road. The two do not fit in the same call.
A spectacularly narrow cleft in the mountain wall, where cliffs drop vertically into deep green water, so close that ships turn around on the spot. Boats and fast craft run there from the Svolvær quays. Safari trips watch for white-tailed eagles, which sometimes dive on a fish metres from passengers.
The cradle of Lofoten's seasonal fishery, about ten minutes away by road. The Lofoten Museum traces the hard life of past crews, the aquarium shows cold-water wildlife, and Vågan church, nicknamed the Lofoten cathedral, raises its timber frame beside the road.
Yes, Tjeldbergtind at 367 metres. The trail starts a short distance from the centre and takes two to three hours return, for a full panorama over town, the anchorages, the bridges and the lace of mountains running island to island. Proper shoes and a windbreaker are essential: weather changes fast between valleys.
Whatever the sea gave that morning: fresh or dried cod, halibut, salmon, king crab in season. Some restaurants offer the islands' most divisive speciality, cod tongue. Waterfront cafés warm walkers with waffles and hot chocolate.
Former fishermen's cabins on stilts with deep-red facades, lined around the basin and now turned into lodgings and restaurants. The fishery is no stage set, though: every winter Arctic cod comes down to spawn in these waters and still drives the archipelago's economy.
The Norwegian krone, and credit cards everywhere, down to the harbour cafés. Norway runs almost entirely cashless. No currency exchange is needed before the call.
Summer for the midnight sun, walkable trails and Trollfjord safaris at their best. In winter, auroras appear above the horns of the stone goat, but daylight is very short and Tjeldbergtind turns slippery. On a summer call no aurora is possible: the sky never gets dark.
