Ships anchor offshore and tenders drop passengers straight onto the seafront, in the middle of the action. There is no distant terminal and no shuttle bus : town begins at the end of the pier.
Yes. The pedestrian seafront boulevard, the town beaches, the cafés and the shops all run along the shore from the tender pier. Only Butrint, Ksamil and Lëkurësi Castle require a vehicle.
You have two options. Butrint, the UNESCO site about 45 minutes south by road, which fills half a day. Or the town itself : the seafront promenade, a swim off a town beach, grilled fish for lunch and a short taxi ride up to Lëkurësi Castle.
Butrint is a UNESCO World Heritage site about 45 minutes south of Saranda by road. You walk through a Greek theatre, Roman baths, an early Christian baptistery with mosaics, a Byzantine basilica and a Venetian fortress, all on a wooded peninsula beside a lagoon. Allow half a day, with a hat and water.
Yes. Town beaches, narrow strips of pebble and sand, line the centre just metres from the terraces, and the water is remarkably clear. The country's most popular beaches are a little further south at Ksamil, on the road to Butrint.
Yes. The Greek island sits just a few kilometres offshore, facing the bay. From Lëkurësi Castle on the hill above town you can see the whole of it lying on the Ionian Sea.
By taxi, a short ride up from the seafront. This 16th century Ottoman fortress, now a panoramic restaurant, gives the classic view over the bay, the olive country and Corfu.
The Albanian lek and the Albanian language. English, Italian and Greek get you by in tourist areas. Carry cash : small shops and taxis prefer it.
May through October. Saranda is a beach resort : July and August are hot and very busy, while June and September bring warm water and quieter sites. Butrint is best visited outside the hottest hours.
Yes. Everything is within walking distance of the tender pier, the town beaches are right there and the terraces are welcoming. In the evening the xhiro, the ritual stroll that fills the seafront with families and strollers, is worth going ashore for on its own if the ship stays late.
