Frequently Asked Questions
At the Nelson Mandela terminal, a modern facility opened in 2023, right beside the beachfront district. It is a convenient starting point: uShaka Marine World is about five minutes' walk away.
A 16-hectare marine park holding one of the southern hemisphere's major aquariums, set in a reconstructed shipwreck where sharks, rays and tropical fish circulate. Water slides, touch pools, shops and restaurants complete it.
Six kilometres of promenade fringed with golden sand between the southern point and the Umgeni river mouth. Runners, surfers, ice cream sellers and anglers share the esplanade, punctuated by brightly painted lifeguard huts.
Yes. The water, warmed by the Agulhas current, stays warm nearly all year, and patrolled swimming zones are spaced along the Golden Mile beaches.
A few minutes by taxi from the promenade, or by bicycle along the seafront path. A funicular, the SkyCar, climbs the 106-metre white arch to a viewing platform taking in the beaches, the harbour and the KwaZulu-Natal hills.
A hollowed-out half loaf filled with curry, invented here and eaten standing, napkin in hand. It is the city's signature dish, a legacy of the largest Indian-origin community outside India.
At the Victoria Street Market, where stalls overflow with masalas, bangles, saris and incense. Bargaining is expected, in a cheerful din.
Very good. uShaka fills a whole day without anyone getting bored, the promenade is easy by bicycle and the beaches are patrolled. Everything sits within reasonable reach of the terminal.
The same as in any large city: leave valuables aboard, stick to busy areas and take a taxi or car with driver for trips beyond the beachfront. Subtropical sun means sunscreen and water, even under cloud.
The South African rand, with cards accepted in shops and restaurants. Zulu, English and Afrikaans are spoken; English works everywhere.
