At Zayed Port, the capital's historic basin, about five kilometres from downtown. A modern cruise terminal welcomes passengers with information counters and waiting taxis; the waterfront is under ten minutes away by car.
By taxi, no booking required. The network is reliable and affordable, and it's the simplest way to build your day à la carte. The day organises itself easily and independently, which is one of the great strengths of this Gulf call.
The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and the Louvre Abu Dhabi, in that order, with a taxi between them. These are the two monuments that justify the call. Add the corniche only if time remains: trying to do everything guarantees seeing everything in a hurry.
A museum on Saadiyat Island, about ten kilometres from the terminal, that would justify the call on its own. Beneath its vast latticed dome designed by Jean Nouvel, light falls in shifting patches over cool plazas surrounded by water. Allow at least two hours.
The galleries set civilisations in dialogue, Chinese bronzes, European paintings, Islamic arts, along a chronological path of remarkable clarity, from the first Mesopotamian cities to contemporary art. Keep a few minutes for the outdoor terraces, where the sea comes right in under the dome.
Shoulders, arms and legs covered for everyone, a headscarf for women. Abayas are lent at the entrance, but the queue is long at peak times. The mosque closes to visitors on Friday mornings: check the day of your call before making the trip.
A long palm-lined promenade unrolling several kilometres of shaded pavement, supervised beaches and cycle paths between the sea and the towers. Kiosks rent bicycles along the way. It's where you take the measure of local life, especially late in the day.
The tempo. The Emirati capital keeps a calmer rhythm than its neighbour: here the great museums, the palaces and the corniche set the tone for a call where the excess is first of all cultural. Dubai puts on the show, Abu Dhabi builds the collection.
The UAE dirham. Cards work everywhere, taxis included, but a little cash remains useful for small purchases. Arabic is the official language and English is spoken absolutely everywhere: it is one of the easiest calls in the Gulf.
November to March, which is in any case the only cruise season in the Gulf. Summer there regularly passes 45 degrees with heavy humidity: the corniche and the palaces become unusable, and even the walk from a taxi to an entrance turns punishing.
