At the Cabo Rojo pier in Pedernales province, at the southwestern tip of the Dominican Republic, close to the Haitian border. This terminal received its first ship in January 2024: it is the country's newest maritime gateway, and remains lightly built.
The wild country of Jaragua National Park begins practically at the ship's feet. The two main outings are Bahía de las Águilas and Oviedo Lagoon. To stay within walking distance, Cabo Rojo beach runs right alongside the port facilities.
Eight kilometres of pale sand between coral rock headlands, with not a single building — regularly ranked at the top of Dominican beaches. It is usually reached by boat from the fishing hamlet of Las Cuevas, or by four-wheel drive. There are almost no services: that bareness is exactly what makes it valuable.
Yes. The water shifts from pale green to deep turquoise with depth, and the seabed suits mask and snorkel. The lucky ones meet a turtle on the way. The short crossing from Las Cuevas runs beneath cliffs and candelabra cactus.
A stretch of brackish water behind a coastal bar, less than an hour by road on the far side of the park. Local guides' boats thread between islets where flamingos, spoonbills and herons nest; rhinoceros iguanas, endemic to Hispaniola, bask on the limestone banks. Allow two to three hours, binoculars strongly advised.
Because of the reddish tones of its rock, long mined for bauxite. Yesterday's mining installations have given way to today's passengers. The ochre cliffs and the Sierra de Bahoruco behind give the arrival a look that is nothing like the usual beach resort.
Very few, and it is better to know: no row of duty-free shops and no hotel towers. The terminal is new and still lightly built; organised excursions remain the simplest way to get around. Bring what you need before stepping off.
The Dominican peso. US dollars are accepted in tourist-facing businesses, but there are few of them in this region. Carry small notes for guides, boats and the shops in Pedernales.
Larimar jewellery, that milky blue stone mined only in the mountains of this region — nowhere else on the planet. You will find it in the shops of the small town, which still lives by fishing and border trade.
Water, hat and sunscreen are essential: the sun is fierce and shade is scarce in Jaragua park. Bahía de las Águilas offers almost no shelter, and the boat trips on Oviedo Lagoon are fully exposed.
