Frequently Asked Questions
At the Costa Morena quay in the outer harbour, two to three kilometres from the centre. Shuttles link it to the heart of town in a few minutes. Walking is not practical from this berth: take the shuttle.
The Lungomare Regina Margherita, a palm-lined seafront where Brindisi life flows between kiosks, fishermen and strollers. The almost enclosed roadstead gives the place the feel of a large calm lake, where ferries to Greece and Albania pass local fishing boats.
The end point of the Via Appia, queen of Roman roads, after five hundred and sixty kilometres from Rome. About nineteen metres high, it signalled the end of the route to sailors. There were originally two: the twin collapsed in 1528 and its sections were given to Lecce.
The centre is more than enough. The Roman column and its staircase, the cathedral, the Ribezzo archaeological museum, the church of San Giovanni al Sepolcro with its medieval frescoes, then a meal in the lanes. Lecce and Ostuni require a full day.
Yes, both are less than an hour away by road. But honestly: that turns the call into a travel day, and Brindisi itself, too often passed through without a glance, amply rewards those who give it their hours ashore.
A circular-plan church inherited from the crusading orders, a few streets from the cathedral. The dark, bare interior preserves fragments of medieval frescoes. It is one of the most unusual buildings in the old centre.
The Castello Svevo, raised in the thirteenth century by Frederick II of Swabia and thickened by the Aragonese, is mainly seen from outside: it was long a military site. Massive and glowing red at sunset, it sums up the city's warlike and maritime vocation.
Puglian specialities: orecchiette with cime di rapa, creamy burrata, the day's grilled fish, with a full-bodied local red, Primitivo or Negroamaro. A coffee taken standing at the bar completes the local routine.
The euro and Italian. English is spoken in seafront businesses and near the international ferries, less so in the lanes. Cards work in restaurants; keep cash for cafes and small shops.
Spring and autumn. Puglian summers are crushing and the centre offers little shade between the column and the castle. In May, June, September or October, walking stays pleasant all day.
