Right along the Danube, less than a ten-minute walk from the historic centre. No coach, no industrial zone to cross: the gangway touches the quay and the old town is already there.
Yes, entirely. Distances in the centre are short, everything is cobbled and pedestrian, and even the climb to the castle starts on foot from the cathedral. It is one of the easiest calls on the Danube.
The riverside promenade, the main square and old town hall, the pink Primate's Palace, St Michael's Gate, St Martin's Cathedral, then the climb to the castle for the panorama.
The view, more than the rooms. From its hilltop you see the Danube stretching away, the newer districts on the far bank and, on a clear day, the vineyards rolling towards Austria and Hungary. Three countries in one glance.
Because it long served as the coronation church of the Hungarian monarchy, when the city was called Pressburg. The tall, plain Gothic interior takes only a few minutes before you continue up towards the castle.
A bronze figure emerging from a manhole, now the city's mascot. It belongs to a series of playful street statues scattered through the centre: look up as you walk, the ornate shop signs are worth it too.
The centre is flat and easy, but the cobbles are uneven and the castle climb is genuinely steep. A taxi gets you to the castle without the ascent; everything else presents no difficulty.
The euro. Cards work almost everywhere in the centre, including cafés and the souvenir stalls near the Primate's Palace.
Slovak. In the centre, English and German are common in cafés and shops used to river cruise traffic; French is rarer.
Yes, for different reasons. It shines less brightly on river itineraries, but its centre fits in a pocket, the mooring is right downtown and you can see it all without rushing. It is the most restful of the three.
