Former capital of Brazil, Rio de Janeiro is full of wonders for you to discover. The second most populous city in the country, and probably the best known, this destination has many tourist attractions not to be missed, starting with its beautiful beaches and the Rio Carnival, the most popular event in the region.
There is little chance you will be bored if you have chosen this destination for your next vacation. Here are some things not to miss on your next trip to Rio de Janeiro.
The Rio Carnival
After the New Year's celebrations, this is the biggest party in the country. The Rio Carnival attracts millions of people, mostly Brazilians from all over the country, who come to attend the festivities that take place outdoors during the four days preceding Ash Wednesday in February.
The ultimate goal of this very colourful event, organized months in advance, is for King Momo to choose his queen from among the most beautiful girls who know how to dance the samba, a cultural symbol of Brazil.
Everywhere in the streets during the festival, thousands of costumed Brazilians dance while proudly wearing their country's colours. The highlight of the Carnival is undoubtedly the parade of samba schools, which takes place in the Sambadrome, in the centre of the city. A must see.
The Cultural Landscape of Rio
There are other points of interest worth visiting in Rio de Janeiro. One is the famous statue of Christ the Redeemer atop Mount Corcovado. This iconic tourist and cultural symbol of the city is also observable from Sugarloaf Mountain, another site not to be missed if you are planning a trip to Brazil.
Overlooking the harbour of Rio, this mountain of 396 metres offers breathtaking views of the city and its surroundings. One can either climb or take a cable car to the summit.
Many other attractions await you in Rio de Janeiro. This is the case of the Tijuca National Park, which includes caves, waterfalls, and other breathtakingly beautiful natural wonders. While there, you can also admire the tropical flora and many exotic animal species such as cobras, iguanas, and lizards.
Copacabana Beach
This beach, located in the district of the same name in Rio de Janeiro, is one of the most beautiful and famous in the world, so you cannot overlook it if you are planning a trip to Brazil.
Indeed, 4.5 km long, it is part of one of the most beautiful landscapes that Brazil has to offer. Between mountains and palm trees, a boardwalk stretches alongside the beach, where you can stop for a bite or a drink in one of the many restaurants and bars available to tourists.
Many prestigious hotels also located there. This is the perfect place to stay during your next vacation in Brazil. Bon voyage!
