Kenya Travel from Canada: The Complete Guide

Kenya is a one-stop trip from both Montréal and Toronto: Air France connects through Paris, KLM through Amsterdam and Qatar Airways through Doha, for a total journey of about 19 to 22 hours from Montréal. From Toronto, Ethiopian Airlines adds a convenient routing through Addis Ababa, often around 20 hours door to door. Canadian citizens need an electronic travel authorization (eTA), obtained online before departure for about US$30. The main dry season, from late June to October, coincides with the wildebeest migration in the Masai Mara, the high point of the safari year, while January to mid-March offers a quieter second dry window. Ten days is enough to combine savannah, mountain scenery and the Indian Ocean coast, with Nairobi as your gateway.

    Why Kenya

Kenya invented the modern safari, and a century of experience shows in every detail: superbly trained guides, camps set in exactly the right spots, and bush planes linking the reserves in under an hour. The Masai Mara holds one of the highest densities of lions, leopards and cheetahs on the continent. Around the national reserve, private conservancies cap the number of vehicles at each sighting and allow night drives, which changes the experience entirely.

The variety of landscapes surprises first-time visitors. In Amboseli, elephant herds file past the foot of Kilimanjaro, best photographed at dawn when the summit clears. The Rift Valley lakes, led by Nakuru and Bogoria, draw pelicans and flamingos. On the Laikipia plateau, Ol Pejeta Conservancy protects the last two northern white rhino females on Earth. The Indian Ocean coast around Diani lets you end the trip with your feet in the sand.

The time-to-reward ratio also works in Kenya's favour: distances are manageable and domestic flights are frequent, so a single week can cover two or three ecosystems. Many travellers then continue to Tanzania, whose Serengeti extends the same ecosystem south of the Mara.

How to get there from Canada

From Montréal, Air France offers the fastest routing: YUL to Paris-Charles de Gaulle, then a daytime flight to Nairobi, for a total of about 19 hours with a short connection. KLM through Amsterdam and Qatar Airways through Doha post comparable times, generally 20 to 23 hours depending on the layover. From Toronto, the same European and Gulf hubs apply, and Ethiopian Airlines connects through Addis Ababa with well-timed onward flights to Nairobi. All routes land at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO), about twenty kilometres from downtown Nairobi.

To reach the reserves, Safarilink and AirKenya depart from Wilson Airfield for the Masai Mara, Amboseli or Samburu airstrips in 45 minutes to 1 hour. By road, allow 5 to 6 hours from Nairobi to the Mara, partly on rough track. For the coast, the Madaraka Express train links Nairobi and Mombasa in about 5 hours, a pleasant way to finish the trip at the beach.

    Kenya's essential regions

    The Masai Mara

Kenya's most famous reserve concentrates big cats and large herbivores year-round, with the wildebeest crossing the Mara River from July to October. Entry fees run US$100 to 200 per adult per day depending on the season, a real line item in any budget. Neighbouring conservancies such as Naboisho and Mara North cap vehicles at sightings and channel revenue directly to Maasai communities.

    Amboseli

The park revolves around its great elephant families, among the most studied in Africa, with Kilimanjaro as the backdrop. Marshes fed by the volcano's meltwater draw the herds through the dry season, guaranteeing close encounters. Two nights are enough, ideally combined with Tsavo West or the Chyulu Hills.

    Laikipia and Ol Pejeta

This high plateau below Mount Kenya gathers the country's most advanced conservation projects. Ol Pejeta protects both black and white rhinos and runs a chimpanzee sanctuary. The region's conservancies allow walking, horseback and night safaris, all activities off-limits in the national parks.

    Tsavo East and Tsavo West

The two Tsavos form one of Africa's largest protected areas, crossed by the Nairobi-Mombasa road and railway. Highlights include the famous red elephants, tinted by the local laterite soil, and Mzima Springs, where hippos can be watched from a submerged viewing chamber. Crowds stay thin compared with the Mara, a real advantage in high season.

    Nairobi

The capital deserves a day at the start or end of the circuit. Nairobi National Park lines up rhinos and giraffes against a skyline of office towers, a contrast found nowhere else. Add the Sheldrick elephant orphanage, the Giraffe Centre and Karen Blixen's house for an efficient loop through the Karen district.

Diani and the Indian Ocean coast

South of Mombasa, Diani unrolls a long ribbon of white sand sheltered by a coral reef, with diving, kitesurfing and dhow trips on the menu. Ukunda airfield receives direct flights from the Masai Mara airstrips, which makes the safari-and-beach combination effortless. Three or four nights here close out a two-week itinerary well.

    The budget, in Canadian dollars

    ExpenseBudgetComfortHigh-end
Round-trip flight from Montréal or Toronto$1,500 to $1,900$1,900 to $2,500$3,500 and up
    Accommodation (per night, 2 people)$80 to $150$250 to $500$800 to $2,000
Meals (per day, per person)$20 to $40$50 to $90Often included at lodges
Local transport (per day)$10 to $30$60 to $150 (shared safari vehicle)$250 and up (private vehicle or bush plane)
Activities and visits (per day)$40 to $80$100 to $200 (park fees included)$300 and up

These ranges are provided as a guideline, based on rates and prices observed in 2025-2026. On safari, accommodation usually includes meals and game drives, which explains the gap between categories. Budget separately for park fees and guide tips, payable in cash, ideally in US dollars.

Entry requirements and health for Canadian citizens

    • Visa: an eTA is mandatory for all travellers, children included; apply at etakenya.go.ke at least 3 days before departure, up to 3 months in advance (about US$30).
    • Passport: must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry into Kenya.
    • Official advisory: the Government of Canada advises a high degree of caution due to crime and the threat of terrorism, and advises against all travel to areas bordering Somalia, South Sudan and Ethiopia; check travel.gc.ca before booking.
    • Yellow fever: proof of vaccination is required if you arrive from a country where the disease occurs; vaccination is sometimes recommended depending on your itinerary, to be assessed at a travel clinic.
    • Malaria: present in most safari regions, including the Masai Mara and the coast; antimalarial medication is generally recommended, along with repellent and long sleeves in the evening.
    • Health: keep routine vaccinations current and get hepatitis A protection; visit a travel health clinic 6 weeks before departure.
    • Travel insurance: medical coverage with evacuation is essential, since hospitals are far from the reserves; many operators include Flying Doctors (AMREF) coverage.

One last tip: plan 10 to 12 days for a first trip, covering two or three reserves followed by a few nights on the coast. Short regional flights also make it easy to continue into northern Tanzania or Zanzibar. For migration season, book 8 to 12 months ahead, as the best camps fill up very early.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Canadian citizens must obtain an electronic travel authorization (eTA) before departure, including for children. Apply online at etakenya.go.ke at least 3 days before your flight; the fee is about US$30. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry.
There is currently no nonstop service, so plan on 19 to 22 hours with one connection. From Montréal, the fastest routing is Air France through Paris at about 19 hours; from Toronto, Ethiopian Airlines through Addis Ababa is often around 20 hours. KLM through Amsterdam and Qatar Airways through Doha are solid alternatives from both cities.
The main dry season, from late June to October, concentrates wildlife at waterholes and coincides with the migration in the Masai Mara. January to mid-March offers a second dry window with fewer visitors. The long rains of April and May are best avoided on a first trip.
The Government of Canada advises exercising a high degree of caution due to crime and the threat of terrorism, and avoiding all travel to border areas near Somalia, South Sudan and Ethiopia. Safari circuits operate far from those zones in a highly structured setting. Check travel.gc.ca before booking and avoid walking after dark in cities.
As a guideline, plan on CAD 3,500 to 6,500 per person for a one-week safari trip, flights included, in the comfort category. Park fees add up quickly, with the Masai Mara charging US$100 to 200 per adult per day depending on the season. Top-end camps push totals well beyond that range.
Kenya runs on East Africa Time (UTC+3) year-round, with no daylight saving. That puts Nairobi 7 hours ahead of Montréal and Toronto during daylight saving time, from March to November, and 8 hours ahead the rest of the year.
The wildebeest herds arrive from the Serengeti around July and head back south in October or November, depending on the rains. River crossings, the most sought-after spectacle, happen mostly from August to October. Book 8 to 12 months ahead for that window, since the best camps sell out early.
Proof of yellow fever vaccination is required if you arrive from a country where the disease occurs, and the vaccine is sometimes recommended depending on your itinerary. Malaria medication is generally advised, as the disease is present in most safari areas and on the coast. Visit a travel health clinic 6 weeks before departure for personalized advice.
Very easily: Diani Beach, south of Mombasa, receives direct flights from the Masai Mara airstrips via Ukunda airfield. The Madaraka Express train also links Nairobi and Mombasa in about 5 hours. Three or four nights on the coast round out a two-week itinerary nicely.
Apply only through the official site, etakenya.go.ke, up to 3 months before travel and no later than 3 days before departure. Have a photo, a passport scan, your itinerary and about US$30 ready for online payment. Avoid third-party websites, whose applications are automatically denied.
