Regensburg, Germany | Cruise Port Guide

Sixteen stone arches have spanned the Danube for nearly nine centuries. As the boat approaches Regensburg, it's this medieval bridge, built between 1135 and 1146, that welcomes the traveller, with a forest of steeples, patrician towers and ochre roofs behind it. Spared by the bombings, the Bavarian city offers one of the best-preserved medieval ensembles in Europe, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2006 together with its Stadtamhof district.

Docking at the foot of the old town

River cruise boats tie up along the Danube quays, just a few hundred metres from the first lanes. No shuttle is needed: you walk down the gangway, follow the river briefly and find yourself in front of the fortified gate that guarded the entrance to the Stone Bridge. Few river port calls offer such an immediate transition from the ship's deck to the Middle Ages.

From Roman camp to merchant city

Regensburg was born in 179 CE as Castra Regina, a legionary camp founded under Marcus Aurelius. A spectacular remnant survives: the Porta Praetoria, a Roman gate whose massive blocks are now embedded in the walls of a lane near the cathedral. In the Middle Ages, trade with Venice and the East enriched the merchant families, who competed by building Italian-style residential towers: the Golden Tower and its neighbours still shape the singular silhouette of the rooftops.

The cathedral and the lanes

The two openwork spires of St. Peter's, a Gothic masterpiece of Bavaria, serve as a landmark wherever you are. Beneath the vaults, the medieval stained glass bathes the nave in deep light; music lovers know the boys' choir attached to the cathedral, one of the oldest in the world. All around, the maze of lanes holds discoveries at every corner: the Alte Kapelle with its gilded Rococo interior, Neupfarrplatz, once the heart of the medieval Jewish quarter, and the Old Town Hall, where the Perpetual Diet of the Holy Roman Empire sat from 1663 to 1806, which you can visit along with its Imperial Hall and dungeons. Farther south, the former St. Emmeram's Abbey became the residence of the princes of Thurn und Taxis, founders of the European postal service: its state rooms and cloister are among the richest visits of the port call.

A snack break 500 years in the making

Close by, a tiny smoky white house treats passersby to grilled sausages: the Wurstkuchl is said to have already fed the builders of the sixteen arches and the dockworkers of the salt port. You sit down on the terrace facing the river, with sweet mustard and sauerkraut on the side. On the opposite bank, Stadtamhof lines up its pastel façades and cafés along its old suburban street, with, on the way back, the best possible view of the riverfront and the towers of the old town.

Walking landmarks

Place From the dock Good to know
Stone Bridge and its gate 5 minutes Panoramic view of the old quarters
St. Peter's Cathedral 10 minutes Free admission, medieval stained glass
Porta Praetoria 10 minutes Roman gate from the year 179

The river flows on

Many passengers return on board feeling they've walked through a city that has stayed true to itself: neither reconstructed nor frozen, simply continuous since antiquity. When the ship picks up the thread of the Danube again and the Gothic spires fade behind the stone arches, you understand why the merchants of old, returning from Venice, always chose to come home by way of Regensburg.
