No. The Romanian capital cannot be seen from the river: lower Danube ships berth at Giurgiu or Oltenița, and a road transfer of about an hour and a half crosses the Wallachian plains to Bucharest.
About three hours of driving round trip from the quay at Giurgiu or Oltenița, on top of time in the city. It is a full day: organized excursions usually combine the Palace of the Parliament, the old town and one of the major museums.
A colossus raised in the 1980s under the Ceaușescu regime, credited with roughly 1,100 rooms dressed in marble, precious woods, crystal and gilding. The guided tour covers only a fraction, enough to grasp the contrast between that state luxury and the shortages Romanians endured at the time.
Bucharest's old town, twenty minutes' walk from the Palace of the Parliament: cobbled lanes, passages and courtyards where bookshops, workshops and terraces sit side by side. You'll find the remains of the princely court, the Curtea Veche, heart of old Bucharest.
The dark frescoes, gilded iconostases and scent of incense in these tiny sanctuaries tucked between apartment blocks. Survivors of the last century's demolitions, they form a striking counterpoint to the bustle of the nearby terraces.
The country's most revered concert hall, a columned rotunda north of the centre, symbol of the elegant prewar capital. Nearby, the Cișmigiu gardens offer paths, a lake and shaded benches: locals play chess and walk their children there.
The Dimitrie Gusti National Village Museum, an open-air museum gathering wooden houses, farms and churches from every region, tracing a thousand years of Romanian rural life. You walk through it like a reassembled hamlet. It is many passengers' favourite surprise.
It depends what you're after. Bucharest resembles no other stop on the river, precisely because it lies away from it: you read a century of European history at speed. Those who prefer riverside villages and the rhythm of the boat will feel the day was lost.
The Romanian leu, not the euro. Cards are taken everywhere in the capital, in restaurants, museums and shops. A little cash in lei stays useful for markets and small cafés.
On foot, from one island of history to the next, with the coach covering long distances. Bring good shoes: the distances between the Palace of the Parliament, Lipscani and the Athenaeum are walkable, but the city is large and the pavements uneven.
