Frequently Asked Questions
Nowhere : the coastal waters are too shallow. Ships anchor offshore and tenders reach Port of Airlie or the nearby marina in about fifteen minutes, depending on the line.
Yes, entirely. The main street is a few minutes' walk from the marinas : cafes, outdoor shops, terraces and tour desks follow one another in a relaxed tropical resort atmosphere.
It is not advised from November to May : stinging jellyfish make sea swimming risky. The town instead maintains a large filtered and patrolled lagoon, open to everyone year round, in the centre of the village.
A public swimming basin on the waterfront, surrounded by lawns and public barbecues. Families settle in for the day facing the yachts moving in and out of the bay. Entry is free.
Seven kilometres of impossibly white silica sand on Whitsunday Island, regularly ranked among the finest beaches in the world. It is reached by fast catamaran or rigid inflatable from Airlie Beach; allow half a day to a full day.
The viewpoint that crowns most Whitehaven trips : sand and turquoise swirl together in patterns that shift with the tide. It is the image everyone brings back from the Whitsundays.
Through snorkelling trips on the fringing reefs, seaplane or helicopter flights, with the famous heart shaped reef seen from the air, or glass bottom boats for those who prefer to stay dry.
Yes, and early. Places sell out quickly on port days, when several hundred passengers are after the same trip to Whitehaven or the reef.
The Bicentennial walkway runs several kilometres along the coast, from the centre to Cannonvale, past beaches, mangroves and jetties. The trails of Conway National Park, about ten minutes' drive away, climb through rainforest to lookouts over the islands.
On weekends an open air market sets up on the waterfront : tropical fruit, crafts and musicians set the tone from the morning on.
