It closed, it stayed closed for more than a year, and the Spanish hotel group Hotusa took it on lease in spring 2025, renovated it, then reopened it at the end of October 2025.

Same building, same cliff, same elevator down to the beach, same bay where humpback whales arrive from mid-January to the end of March. What changed is the banner, the operator and part of the facilities.

Why does this page still exist?

Because thousands of travellers stayed at the Bahía Príncipe Cayacoa and still look for it under that name. Sending them to an error page serves nobody. You are in the right place; the hotel simply changed banner.

What exactly happened?

The property closed its doors and stayed closed for more than a full year. In March 2025 the Spanish group Hotusa, owner of the Eurostars brand, announced it had taken it on lease. It was their first hotel in the Dominican Republic. Work followed, covering the rooms, the common areas and the facilities, and the hotel reopened at the end of October 2025.

Is it the same hotel?

It is the same building and the same location, and the location is what makes this address valuable: a cliff above Samaná Bay, a ten minute walk from the village of Santa Bárbara and its pier, where the whale watching boats leave from.

What changed: the banner, the operator, and the product after renovation. There are now two hundred and eighty-four rooms. Be warned of one thing, and we would rather say it: the building already has a few decades behind it and the renovation refreshed it without making it new. Travellers in 2026 describe it as clean, well kept and ageing, all at once.

Are the whales still there?

They do not depend on hoteliers. From mid-January to the end of March, two to three thousand humpbacks come into Samaná Bay after a five thousand kilometre migration, to mate and to calve. The peak falls between mid-February and mid-March. The boats leave from the village pier, a ten minute walk from the hotel.
