Impression Moxché by Secrets: a hotel inside a hotel, north of Playa del Carmen

Impression Moxché occupies the northern half of a large property shared with Secrets Moxché, inside the gated community of Corasol. The formula fits in one sentence and it is what gives the address its value: you get areas of your own, and you also get everything else. Four pools reserved for Impression guests, one of them a rooftop infinity pool on the ninth floor with a three-hundred-and-sixty-degree view, a beach with exclusive service, three restaurants and four bars closed to everyone else. And on top of that, the whole of the neighbouring Secrets: eleven more restaurants, seven pools, three cut cenotes and an inland beach in calm water. Eighteen and over, butler included from the entry category up, 198 suites in a building that opened in December 2022. One thing to know before falling in love: nothing here is done on foot. Fifth Avenue is six kilometres away.

What is an Impression, exactly?

At Hyatt, Secrets is already an adults-only all-inclusive brand. Impression is the tier above it, grafted onto an existing Secrets rather than built separately. The one at Moxché opened on 1 December 2022 and it was the first in the world.

In practice the property is shared, but the traffic is not. An Impression guest walks freely everywhere, on their own side and on the Secrets side. A Secrets guest does not come up to Impression. The tower, the four pools, the stretch of beach, Cielo Rooftop, Seaside Beach Club and the private check-in lounge stay closed.

That is the difference between paying for a small exclusive hotel and paying for exclusivity on top of a large one. Here you get both, and it is this address's strongest argument.

What does the plan cover?

The programme is called Endless Privileges, not to be confused with the Unlimited-Luxury of the neighbouring Secrets. The difference is more than a label.

Included: a personal butler assigned before you arrive, from seven in the morning to eleven at night, whatever your suite category. Round-the-clock room service. Housekeeping three times a day. A minibar restocked twice daily, plus a rolling bar in the suite and a wine cooler. Top-shelf spirits, domestic and imported, with no limit. Check-in in a private lounge. A complimentary twenty-five-minute wellness experience. Wi-Fi. And three laundry items per person for the stay.

Add Sip, Savor and See access, which lets you dine at participating neighbouring resorts between six in the evening and one in the morning, arranged by the concierge. The transport for it is paid.

Extra charges remain for spa treatments beyond the complimentary experience, snorkelling and scuba diving, deep-sea fishing, golf green fees, and the Teodoro restaurant depending on your suite category. That last point deserves an explanation, and it comes below.

Which suite should you choose?

Ten categories, and the choice turns on three axes rather than on floor area alone.

The first axis is the view. The Signature Suite Tropical View looks onto the garden and the jungle. The Ocean View faces the sea on an angle. And here is the trade-off few people see coming: the Signature Suite Ocean Front, straight onto the water, is 68 square metres, less than the other two at 87. You are trading space for the view. It is up to you to say what waking up facing the sea is worth.

The second axis is the private pool. The Swimout categories add a ground-level basin on the terrace, and the floor area jumps: 125 square metres for the Signature Swimout, 213 for the Master Swimout. Every Signature already has an outdoor soaking tub on its terrace.

The third axis changes a rule, not just the comfort. From the Master Suites up, the Teodoro restaurant becomes unlimited. Below that it is offered once per stay of five nights or more, and charged beyond. If the chef's table is part of your idea of the trip, that threshold is worth the category difference.

At the top come the Panoramic Suite Ocean Front, the two-storey Penthouse with a private pool on its terrace, and the 581-square-metre Presidential Villa Beach Front, feet in the sand, with a full kitchen and a dining room.

Where do you eat, and do you need a reservation?

Start with the good news, because it is rare in an all-inclusive: reservations are not required in the great majority of the restaurants. No queue at nine in the morning, no race for the phone. Only Teodoro and the teppanyaki and omakase counters at Suki take bookings.

Three tables are reserved for Impression guests. Cielo Impression Rooftop serves lunch and dinner on the roof, with the full circle of view. Seaside Beach Club grills with your feet in the sand. Teodoro offers a seven-course tasting menu, formal dress required.

Eleven more tables wait on the Secrets side: Allora for Italian with its wine cellar, Bisou for French, rated AAA Four Diamond, Suki for Japanese, Bamboo for Southeast Asian, Dos Almas for Mexican, Ember for grill and smokehouse, Seasoul for seafood, Market Café for the buffet, Barefoot Grill on the beach, Coco Café around the clock and the Observatory on the roof.

The evening dress code is real and comes in three levels. Casual accepts shorts and sandals, never a tank top for men. Dressy casual asks for a shirt and long trousers, no beach sandals. Formal requires a collared shirt, long trousers and dress shoes. Pack accordingly: that is the kind of detail that spoils a dinner when you learn it at the door.

The pools, the roof and the beach

Four pools belong to Impression. The signature is the one on the ninth floor: a rooftop infinity basin, open through the full circle, with a hot tub, a bar and cabanas. In a Riviera Maya built low, that view is rare. A second pool, raised and heavily landscaped, stays quiet near the beach. A third goes with Seaside Beach Club, steps from the water.

On the Secrets side, seven more pools are added, including three cut cenotes and an inland beach in calm water. Eleven basins in all. Hold on to that number, it matters again a few paragraphs down.

The beach is white sand, with an Impression-only zone and lounger service. Two truths about it. The resort has installed a floating seaweed barrier offshore, which is a sign the subject is taken seriously. And the pool water sometimes passes thirty-two degrees in the middle of the day, to the point of no longer cooling anyone down, which several travellers report.

Where is the hotel, and what is around it?

The hotel sits in Corasol, a private gated community north of Playa del Carmen, off federal highway 307. The Corasol golf course is on site, green fees extra.

Here is the point worth saying up front rather than leaving you to discover it: nothing here is done on foot. Fifth Avenue and its terraces are six kilometres away, about ten minutes by car. The Cozumel ferry dock is in the same place. A taxi settles it every time, and it is simple, but it is a trip on every outing.

For the traveller who wants to walk out to dinner in town every evening, this address is the wrong choice, and we would rather say so beforehand than afterwards. For the one who comes to settle in for a week without getting back on the road, it is exactly the opposite: the quiet of Corasol becomes an advantage.

How do you get there from Quebec?

Cancún is reachable non-stop from Montreal and from Quebec City year-round, with departures multiplying from late autumn through spring. The flight runs around four and a half hours.

From the airport, allow fifty-one kilometres and forty to forty-five minutes on the road. Roadworks on the 307 sometimes stretch the trip, so leave room on the way back.

A valid Canadian passport is enough for a tourist stay, with no visa. Mexico is gradually replacing the paper tourist card with an entry stamp showing the length of stay granted. Let us talk about sargassum, plainly

Playa del Carmen is one of the most exposed stretches of this coast. The shoreline there is long, straight and east-northeast facing, with no natural barrier offshore. The 2025 season was heavy and the 2026 arrivals started earlier than usual, from January and February, which is not the norm.

Two things work in this address's favour. The hotel is north of town, while the heaviest accumulations concentrate in the centre, near the ferry dock. And the resort has installed a floating barrier offshore, with daily manual collection.

Two things work against. Travellers in 2025 and 2026 report stays where the beach was practically unusable. And no barrier guarantees anything during a massive episode.

That is why the eleven pools matter. This hotel is better equipped than most for a stay where the beach falls short: a rooftop pool, three cenotes, an inland beach in calm water. A guest buying first for the beach should aim for autumn and know the risk. A guest coming for the resort will spend a full week without ever feeling deprived.

What disappoints, said plainly

The hotel's rating is excellent and it ranks among the best addresses in Playa del Carmen. The complaints are therefore a minority. They are also very specific, and they often touch what the hotel sells hardest.

The butler comes first. It is the central argument of the Impression tier, and it is the one that disappoints most when it does: slow replies, requests that get lost, staff who are charming but poorly equipped. When it works, it transforms the stay. When it does not, the gap with the promise is felt all the more.

Timeshare selling comes next, at check-in and through leaflets left in the room. In a property sold as luxury, it is the irritant that jars most. A polite firm no settles it, and knowing in advance that the question is coming keeps you from being caught off guard.

Check-in is long and passes through several people. Departure requires a separate checkout pass, which surprises people.

The distances deserve a paragraph of their own. The property is vast and there is no buggy service. Going from the Impression tower to the Secrets restaurants or to the spa means a real walk, on paving stones that are sometimes uneven. For a traveller with reduced mobility, that is the point to weigh before all the others, and we check it with the hotel before confirming.

Two elevators per wing for nine levels is few, and they are cramped.

Finally, two lighter but repeated remarks: the cocktail lists are limited and the bar works from prepared syrups, which sits oddly beside the promise of top-shelf spirits. And the activity programme is quiet. A traveller looking for entertainment will be better served elsewhere.

Who this suits, and who it does not

It suits the couple who want quiet, space and a real table. The ratio between the exclusivity of the Impression areas and the variety of the neighbouring Secrets is hard to beat on this coast: fourteen restaurants and eleven pools available, in a building that opened in 2022. It suits the traveller who plans to stay put all week. And it suits anyone who hates chasing restaurant reservations, because here there are almost none to make.

It suits poorly anyone who wants to walk out every evening: town is six kilometres away. It suits poorly anyone who walks with difficulty, because of the internal distances and the absence of a buggy. It suits poorly anyone looking for entertainment and a full programme. And families are ruled out outright by the eighteen-and-over policy.

Two other addresses on the same coast answer those needs. The Royal Hideaway Playacar keeps the adults-only formula and the high-end service, but in Playacar, within walking distance of Fifth Avenue: it is the choice for those who want the luxury and the town.
