Hotel Riu Ocho Rios: it never closed after Melissa, and it has a water park

Start with what matters most this winter. When Hurricane Melissa crossed Jamaica on 28 October 2025, seven Riu hotels on the island closed for repairs. One stayed open throughout: this one. Riu said so in its own release of 24 November 2025. Ocho Rios came through far better than the west of the island, and travellers who have been since report no trace of the hurricane. As for the rest: 901 rooms at Mammee Bay, in a sheltered cove where the swimming is calm, five stars, a family formula, six pools and Splash Water World, Riu's first water park in Jamaica. Dunn's River Falls are eight minutes away. It is a big resort by volume, not an intimate address, and what follows says so plainly.

Where does Jamaica stand, a year after the hurricane?

The question comes up in almost every call since last autumn, so let us answer it with facts rather than impressions.

Melissa struck on 28 October 2025, and it mainly hit the west and southwest of the island: Negril, Westmoreland, Black River. Ocho Rios, on the north coast, came through with fallen trees and broken fences. The beaches in the area were declared safe the day after the storm.

The Jamaica Tourist Board confirmed the full restart of the tourism corridors on 12 December 2025. All three airports operate normally, cruise calls have resumed, and Ocho Rios hosts the national travel trade show in 2026, which would not happen in a town still under repair.

Hotel Riu Ocho Rios itself never interrupted operations. That is a real argument, and it is one of the few certainties we can give a client hesitating to book Jamaica this winter.

What is Splash Water World?

It is the first water park Riu built in Jamaica, arriving with the major renovation of 2019 and 2020. It is included in the plan.

No other large all-inclusive in Ocho Rios offers the equivalent, and it is what often decides a family between this address and its neighbours. Add an area for the smallest children, with its own pool and slides sized for them.

RiuLand takes children aged four to twelve, with an indoor space for rainy days, and Riu4U picks up with the teenagers. A family with children of different ages finds its footing here, which is rarer than you would think.

What is Mammee Bay beach like?

This is the other good news at this address. The Riu occupies a sheltered cove, west of central Ocho Rios, with fine white sand and generally calm water. For a family with young children, that changes everything compared with a beach taking the swell.

One detail travellers mention and which we would rather repeat: there is reef and rocky bottom in places. It is excellent for watching fish with a mask, and it is a good reason to bring water shoes.

On the pool side, count six, two of them with swim-up bars. The site is large and the entertainment is lively, so there is always a quieter basin than the last one.

Which room should you choose?

Sixteen categories, and three markers are enough.

The standard double is 28 square metres, with or without a sea view, side or front. The Jr. Suite goes up to 34 square metres and the Suite to 69. Connecting categories exist in both double and Jr. Suite, which gives a large family flexibility. Family rooms are 35 square metres, and the two-bedroom version is 60.

The point worth highlighting, and one you do not often see: the hotel publishes two categories adapted for reduced mobility, a double room and a 35-square-metre Jr. Suite, bookable as such. The elevators, gym, pool, reception and restaurants are accessible. On a 901-room hotel, that is a genuine quality and we name it.

Where do you eat?

St. Ann is the main buffet, open for all three meals, with cooking stations in front of you and theme nights three times a week. Four tables complete it: Kulinarium for refined cooking, Mandalay for Asia, Piacenza for Italian with its fresh pasta, and the pool restaurant that turns into a steakhouse in the evening. Pepe's Food serves Jamaican jerk, added during the renovation.

Riu's twenty-four-hour all-inclusive applies here: meals, snacks and local and imported drinks circulate day and night, with no wristband tiers.

Two things to know before you leave. There is no room service, and there is no cash machine on site. Plan your cash before you arrive, or pick some up in Ocho Rios.

What is there to do around here?

Ocho Rios is the best excursion base in all of Jamaica, and this hotel sits well placed to use it.

Dunn's River Falls are eight minutes away. You climb them in a human chain through the water; it is the classic image of Jamaica and it earns the outing. The Blue Hole, on the White River, offers a wilder and less crowded version, and it was confirmed operating after the hurricane.

Add Mystic Mountain and its chairlifts above the forest, Dolphin Cove, Konoko Falls, tubing down the White River, and Fern Gully, that road lined with giant ferns. Further inland, Nine Mile and Bob Marley's house make a day trip.

Central Ocho Rios, with its craft market and cruise terminal, is about ten minutes east by road.

How do you get there from Quebec?

Montego Bay is reachable non-stop from Montreal, with service concentrated in the winter season. The flight runs around four and a half hours.

Then, to be clear: Montego Bay airport is ninety kilometres away, about an hour and a half by road. That is the price of Ocho Rios, and it is better known before departure than while boarding the coach. The small Ian Fleming airport at Boscobel is half an hour away, but it takes few scheduled flights from Canada.

For the country and its regions, our Jamaica page covers the ground, and our Ocho Rios page presents the other addresses in the area.

A valid Canadian passport is required. Check current entry requirements at travel.gc.ca before you leave, and keep in mind that hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, peaking in September and October.

What disappoints, said plainly

The hotel holds a decent rating, and the water park, the beach and the value for money come up in the positive comments. The complaints are specific and deserve naming before departure.

The most serious first. Travellers in the summer of 2026 report plumbing failures, including three days without cold water and out-of-service toilets affecting the restaurants as well. It is not an isolated incident in the reviews, and it is the point we check with the supplier before confirming a booking.

Service is uneven. Staff earn praise from some and indifference from others. On a 901-room hotel, the experience varies a great deal from one stay to the next.

The à la carte restaurants disappoint a share of guests, who describe dishes prepared ahead and reheated. The buffet, oddly, rates better. Buffet hygiene does draw remarks, though: uncovered fruit, shared utensils.

Then there is uneven room condition, weak Wi-Fi in the rooms even though it is free, high noise levels in some restaurants, and a laundry service that takes three days.

None of that concerns the hurricane. Travellers who have been since November 2025 describe a clean, intact property.

Who this suits, and who it does not

It suits the family that wants a water park, a calm beach and a reasonable price, with clubs covering every age through the teens. It suits the traveller who plans to go out on excursions, because Dunn's River Falls and the Blue Hole are minutes away. And it suits particularly well, this winter, anyone who wants Jamaica without playing the reopening lottery.

It suits poorly the couple looking for quiet and intimacy: 901 rooms, entertainment, a nightclub and volume. It suits poorly anyone expecting upscale service and a gourmet table. And it asks patience for the drive from Montego Bay.

Two other addresses in Ocho Rios answer those needs. Moon Palace Jamaica plays in a more upmarket register, with more polished service, in a family format as well. Couples Tower Isle is adults only, in a markedly smaller and quieter format, for a couple who wants the north coast without other people's children.

Booking Hotel Riu Ocho Rios with an advisor

At this address, three things earn a call. The real state of the hotel and its plumbing on your dates, which we check with the supplier. The room category, because the view and the floor matter a great deal on a site this size, and because the two adapted categories are requested at booking. And the transfer from Montego Bay, which takes an hour and a half and needs planning.

Call 1 866 628-6241. You will reach someone who knows this address and who has time for you. We look together at what is actually free on your dates, we pick the right room, and we stay a phone call away while you are there. That is the difference between booking alone in front of a screen and leaving with someone behind you.
