Iberostar Waves Quetzal: closed for refurbishment, reopening 1 December 2026

Read this before you plan. The hotel has been closed since 15 May 2026 and it reopens on 1 December 2026. Iberostar is rebuilding the whole resort, and what comes back in December will not be the same hotel: waterslides, a redesigned splash pad, renovated restaurants, and new room categories with direct pool access. Guests already booked during the works are rehoused at Iberostar Selection Paraíso Lindo, with an upgrade. If your dates fall before 1 December, call us: we have good alternatives in the same area and under the same brand. If they fall after, call us too, because the first weeks of a rebuilt hotel fill quickly and we want to confirm with Iberostar what will actually be delivered at opening.

Note as well that the hotel has changed its name. The former Iberostar Quetzal is now Iberostar Waves Quetzal, since the group regrouped its properties into the Waves, Selection, Grand and JOIA ranges.

What exactly reopens on 1 December?

Iberostar announces four concrete changes, and three of them aim straight at families.

Waterslides appear. The hotel had none, which was its main gap against the big family resorts on this coast. The splash pad for small children is being redone. The restaurants are renovated. And new room categories arrive, including rooms with direct pool access from the terrace, a format the hotel did not offer.

What we do not yet know, and refuse to invent: the exact room count after the works, the new restaurant line-up, and whether the current categories survive as they are. A six-and-a-half-month closure changes a great deal. We will confirm all of it with Iberostar before finalizing a December or January booking.

Where is this hotel, and why that is its real asset

Here is the point brochures bury in the middle of a facilities list, when it should lead.

Iberostar Waves Quetzal is in Playacar, the gated residential district on the southern edge of Playa del Carmen. Not out on the federal highway in the middle of nowhere: in town. Fifth Avenue and its terraces are about twenty minutes away on foot, or a few minutes by taxi. The Cozumel ferry dock is in the same place.

No hotel in the Iberostar Paraíso complex, ten kilometres north, allows that. It is the fundamental difference between the two groups, and it should decide your choice more than the number of pools.

One useful clarification, because the confusion is common even among tour operators: the Quetzal is not part of the Paraíso complex. It forms a pair with its immediate neighbour, Iberostar Waves Tucán, and the two exchange restaurants and bars. Access to the Paraíso hotels does not exist.

What was the hotel like before the works?

This section describes the hotel as it stood until May 2026. It gives you the measure of the place, knowing that the renovation targets part of what follows.

Around 350 rooms spread across three-storey buildings, deep in vegetation. Categories ran from Premium to an ocean-front Junior Suite with beach access, through one and two-bedroom family formats and a two-bedroom penthouse.

One detail we flagged to every client and which the renovation will have to settle: the buildings had no elevators. Three storeys without a lift is a real obstacle with suitcases, with a stroller or with a tired knee. We will check that specific point at reopening.

Four pools: a large lively lagoon pool, an adults-only pool with a swim-up bar, a lap pool, and a wading pool at the kids club. Star Camp took children aged four to seventeen. A spa with a hydrotherapy circuit completed the picture, at extra cost.

The beach is white sand, with direct access, a sandy bottom and a sea that is generally calm to moderate. No rock and no reef in front of the hotel. A shortage of shade palapas came up often in reviews: you had to get up early.

What travellers criticized, and what the works should fix

We would rather give you an honest state of play than a page of promises. The hotel kept a good overall rating, and the complaints landed on specific points.

The food was judged to have slipped, with dishes served lukewarm. The rooms were dated: few outlets, limited storage, temperamental showers. The absence of elevators weighed. Shade ran short at the beach and at the pool. And the evening show carried until eleven, particularly in one block.

Two other irritants have nothing to do with the building and will not vanish with the works. First, the loyalty programme presentation looks a great deal like a timeshare approach, and it is insistent. A clear refusal on arrival settles it. Second, several travellers felt that the quality of service and of the spirits poured varied with tipping. That is a reality worth knowing in advance rather than discovering at the bar.

Of that list, the renovation touches the restaurants and the rooms directly. For the shade, the elevators and the rest, we will put the question to Iberostar and answer you plainly.

Where to stay until 1 December?

Iberostar rehouses guests already booked at Iberostar Selection Paraíso Lindo, with an upgrade. It is a good choice and it is the largest of the Paraíso complex hotels, with a water park on site. The trade-off is that it sits ten kilometres north, on the federal highway: you lose precisely what makes the Quetzal interesting, the walk to Fifth Avenue.

Two other options depending on what you are after. Iberostar Selection Paraíso Maya stays in the same complex, in a more upmarket register. And if it was the in-town location that drew you, the Royal Hideaway Playacar is in the same Playacar district, the same walking distance from Fifth Avenue, adults only and considerably more upscale.

A word about the immediate neighbour: Iberostar Waves Tucán closes on exactly the same dates, 15 May to 30 November 2026. Both Playacar hotels are under works together, so falling back on one to avoid the other serves no purpose.

How do you get there from Quebec?

Cancún is reachable non-stop from Montreal and from Quebec City year-round, with departures multiplying from late autumn through spring. The flight runs around four and a half hours.

From the airport, allow around sixty kilometres and roughly an hour on the road. Playacar sits at the southern entrance to Playa del Carmen, which stretches the trip slightly compared with hotels further north.

A valid Canadian passport is enough for a tourist stay, with no visa. Mexico is gradually replacing the paper tourist card with an entry stamp showing the length of stay granted. Check the number of days written on it, because an officer can grant less than you asked for. For current requirements, consult travel.gc.ca before you leave.

When to go, and sargassum at Playacar

The 1 December reopening falls well, and that is no accident of the calendar. From November to April this coast is at its best: dry weather, clean water, and it is the most reliable window of the year. December, January and February are the three safest months.

What follows calls for frankness. Playacar and Playa del Carmen face due east onto the open Caribbean, with no island and no barrier reef to shelter them. It is one of the stretches most exposed to sargassum in the whole Riviera Maya. The build-up starts in May, the peak lands in June and July, and August stays heavy. 2026 is shaping up as a record year for the whole of Quintana Roo.

In practice: a stay from December to April barely raises the question, and that is exactly the season reopening. A June or July stay carries a high risk on this particular beach, despite daily collection. We say so before you book.

Who it will suit, once reopened

It will suit the family that wants an all-inclusive and a town within walking distance. That is a rare combination: most large Riviera Maya resorts leave you the choice between staying on the grounds or taking a taxi. Here you walk out to dinner on Fifth Avenue and walk home.

It will also suit, if the works deliver, the family that wanted waterslides and until now had to look elsewhere.

It will suit poorly anyone who wants a very large resort with twenty restaurants: this is a mid-sized hotel, and its offer runs through the exchange with its neighbour. And the traveller with reduced mobility should wait until we have confirmed what the renovation did with those elevator-free buildings.
