Iberostar Waves Tucán: closed for refurbishment, reopening 1 December 2026

Read this before you plan. The hotel has been closed since 15 May 2026 and it reopens on 1 December 2026. Its immediate neighbour, Iberostar Waves Quetzal, closes on exactly the same dates: both Playacar hotels are under works together. Guests already booked are rehoused at Iberostar Selection Paraíso Lindo, with an upgrade. If your dates fall before 1 December, call us, we have good alternatives in the same area. If they fall after, call us too: Iberostar promises new waterslides, a splash pad, two bars with panoramic views, a counter serving tacos, burgers, pizza and ice cream, renovated rooms and rooms with direct pool access. The first weeks of a renovated hotel fill quickly, and we want to confirm with Iberostar what will actually be delivered at opening.

Note the name change as well. The former Iberostar Tucán is now Iberostar Waves Tucán, since the group regrouped its properties into the Waves, Selection, Grand and JOIA ranges.

What changes on 1 December?

Iberostar announces six additions, and the list is fuller than the neighbouring Quetzal's.

New waterslides join the one the hotel already had. A splash pad appears for the smallest children. A casual food counter opens, with tacos, burgers, pizza and ice cream. Two new bars with panoramic views are added. The rooms are redone, and new categories with direct pool access from the terrace make their entrance. The reception is redesigned.

What we do not yet know, and refuse to invent: the room count after the works and the final restaurant line-up. A six-and-a-half-month closure changes a great deal, and we will confirm everything with Iberostar before finalizing a December or January booking.

Where is this hotel, and why that is its real asset

Iberostar Waves Tucán is in Playacar, the gated residential district on the southern edge of Playa del Carmen. In town, not out on the federal highway. Fifth Avenue and its terraces are about twenty minutes away on foot, or a few minutes by taxi, and the Cozumel ferry dock is in the same place.

No hotel in the Iberostar Paraíso complex, ten kilometres north, allows that. It is the fundamental difference between the two groups.

One clarification that spares a lot of misunderstanding: the Tucán is not part of the Paraíso complex. It forms a pair with its immediate neighbour, the Quetzal, and the two exchange restaurants and bars. Access to the Paraíso hotels does not exist.

The Playacar Golf Club course is right next door, at extra cost.

What was the hotel like before the works?

This section describes the hotel as it stood until May 2026. It gives the measure of the place, knowing that the renovation aims squarely at part of it.

Eight restaurants: the Tulum and Cozumel buffets, La Góndola for Italian, Bonsai for Japanese, Uxmal for Mexican, Mare Nostrum for the Mediterranean, Smoke House La Hacienda for the smokehouse, and the Uxmal Beach Grill on the sand. Seven bars, including La Cascada by the pool, El Kiosko on the beach, La Máscara for sport, La Plaza for the shows, two lobby bars and an ice cream counter.

That is more than the Quetzal, and the two hotels exchange their tables. For a family, it is the better side of the pair to choose.

Four pools. Star Camp takes children from four to seventeen, which covers teenagers as well, and the Aqua Fun area adds a slide and play zones. The Sensations spa offers a thermal circuit with a jet pool, sensation shower, sauna and Turkish bath, at extra cost. A PADI-certified dive centre, tennis courts and a fitness room for guests sixteen and over complete the picture.

The beach is white sand with direct access. As everywhere in Playacar, it faces due east onto the open Caribbean.

Where to stay until 1 December?

Iberostar rehouses guests already booked at Iberostar Selection Paraíso Lindo, with an upgrade. It is the largest of the Paraíso complex hotels and it has a water park on site. The trade-off: it sits ten kilometres north, on the federal highway, so you lose the walk to Fifth Avenue.

Iberostar Selection Paraíso Maya remains an option in the same complex, in a more upmarket register. And if it was the in-town location that drew you, the Royal Hideaway Playacar is in the same district, the same walking distance from Fifth Avenue, adults only and considerably more refined.

There is no point falling back on Iberostar Waves Quetzal: it closes on the same dates.

How do you get there from Quebec?

Cancún is reachable non-stop from Montreal and from Quebec City year-round, with departures multiplying from late autumn through spring. The flight runs around four and a half hours.

From the airport, allow around sixty kilometres and roughly an hour on the road. Playacar sits at the southern entrance to Playa del Carmen, which stretches the trip slightly compared with hotels further north.

A valid Canadian passport is enough for a tourist stay, with no visa. Mexico is gradually replacing the paper tourist card with an entry stamp showing the length of stay granted. Check the number of days written on it, because an officer can grant less than you asked for. For current requirements, consult travel.gc.ca before you leave.

When to go, and sargassum at Playacar

The 1 December reopening lands at the right moment. From November to April this coast is at its best: dry weather, clean water, and it is the most reliable window of the year. December, January and February are the three safest months.

The rest calls for frankness. Playacar faces due east onto the open Caribbean, with no island and no barrier reef to shelter it. It is one of the stretches most exposed to sargassum in the whole Riviera Maya. The build-up starts in May, the peak lands in June and July, and August stays heavy. 2026 is shaping up as a record year for the whole of Quintana Roo.

In practice, a stay from December to April barely raises the question, and that is exactly the season reopening. A June or July stay carries a high risk on this beach, despite daily collection.

Who it will suit, once reopened

It will suit the family that wants an all-inclusive and a town within walking distance. That is a rare combination on this coast, where most large resorts leave you the choice between staying on the grounds or taking a taxi.

It will particularly suit the family with teenagers, because the youth club runs to seventeen, which stays uncommon. And if the works deliver, the added slides and splash pad reinforce that profile further.

Between the two Playacar hotels, the Tucán offers more restaurants than the Quetzal. Since they exchange their tables, the difference comes down mainly to atmosphere and to exact position on the grounds, and that is the kind of nuance settled over the phone.

It will suit poorly anyone looking for a very large resort with a full water park, or the quiet of a small adults-only hotel.
