Lighthouse Pointe was the last still-operating wing of the Grand Lucayan complex, whose two other hotels had been closed for years. The site was bought by the Bahamian government, then handed to a developer for a complete redevelopment. Demolition began on 14 April 2026.

The good news, and it is real: Grand Bahama is climbing back. The island passed one million visitors in 2025 for the first time in more than twenty-two years, and two excellent addresses are ready to welcome you in Freeport right now. Here they are.

Where to stay in Freeport right now

Let us start with the useful part, because it is probably what brought you here.

The Pelican Bay Hotel occupies practically the same location, on Bell Channel Bay, a ten-minute walk from the Port Lucaya Marketplace. It is the best-kept on the island, ranked first among Freeport hotels, and the only one whose recent reviews describe a property in good health rather than in decline. One hundred and eighty-six rooms and suites, three pools including a quieter one, a swim-up bar and a restaurant in an open pavilion above the water. It has no beach on site, but a free ferry runs hourly to Taino Beach, and Lucaya Beach is an eight-minute walk away.

Viva Fortuna Beach by Wyndham is the only all-inclusive still operating on Grand Bahama, east of Freeport. Its beach is long, open and rarely busy, because the cruise ships dock elsewhere on the island. The formula runs around the clock, with four restaurants, a kids club and a generous list of included activities, including a trapeze. Its page describes the condition of its facilities frankly.

How we can be certain

We verify before we assert, and here is what lets us do it.

First, our own inventory: the property no longer appears with our supplier. When a hotel disappears from professional booking systems, that is the most reliable signal there is, far more than what consumer sites display.

Second, the convergence. No guest review has been published since June 2025, which is impossible for an operating one-hundred-and-ninety-six-room all-inclusive, while the three other Freeport hotels all carry 2026 reviews. Grand Lucayan employees had gone unpaid as of February 2026 according to an opposition MP. And demolition was announced as having begun on 14 April 2026.

You may still see this hotel offered on some online booking sites. Those listings frequently stay online for months after a closure. It is exactly the kind of gap an advisor catches and a search engine does not.

What is coming to the site

The project is ambitious, and worth following. An eight-hundred-and-twenty-seven-million redevelopment is planned across more than half of the fifty-six beachfront acres: a water park, a three-hundred-and-fifty-room hotel, one hundred and twenty residences, a casino, a signature golf course, a mega-yacht marina, a cruise destination and a beach club.

Opening is targeted for 2028. We stay cautious on that date, because the file has seen several postponements since 2025 and demolition only began in April 2026. We will update this page as soon as a firm date is announced, and we can let you know if you ask us to.

Grand Bahama is climbing back, and that is not a slogan

The island was hit hard by Hurricane Dorian in 2019. What follows is verifiable and encouraging.

Grand Bahama welcomed more than a million visitors in 2025, a high in over twenty-two years, carried by the opening of a major cruise destination on the island's east side in summer 2025. Air arrivals grew about twenty percent year over year and now exceed pre-Dorian levels by more than thirty percent. Freeport airport is being redeveloped.

The imbalance to understand is simple: the island receives a great many day visitors and still has a limited hotel stock. That is precisely what the Lucaya project is meant to correct. In the meantime, those who sleep there have very quiet beaches to themselves.

If Grand Bahama no longer fits your trip

That is a legitimate possibility, and we would rather point you somewhere than let you search.
