Frequently Asked Questions
The cruise berths adjoin the centre: three hundred metres from the gangway puts you in the Art Nouveau quarter. No shuttle, no taxi needed.
Because a fire fanned by a storm razed the timber town on the night of 23 January 1904, leaving ten thousand people homeless in the Norwegian winter. The rebuilding, completed in barely three years with help from across Europe, adopted the style of the moment.
The Jugendstil quarter around the Brosundet canal, the climb to the Aksla viewpoint, and the Art Nouveau Centre. All on foot, at whatever pace you choose.
418, from the town park — about twenty minutes of steady effort, with benches to catch your breath. Anyone put off by the stairs can take the little tourist train from the centre, or a taxi by road.
One of Norway's most famous views: Ålesund spread across its islands, its roofs packed between two arms of the sea, the archipelago offshore and, inland, the wall of the Sunnmøre Alps. A cafe lets you linger.
A museum in the former Swan Pharmacy, whose original interior survives intact. It tells the story of the fire and the rebirth that followed; its time machine amuses adults as much as children.
The Norwegian architects of 1904, young and trained in Germany, mixed dragons, Nordic flowers and Viking motifs into the style of the day. The town has its own ornamental dialect — look up, every facade rewards it.
Cod dried and salted on the rocks, which made Ålesund's fortune and travelled as far as Portugal and Brazil. Restaurants along the canal serve it as bacalao simmered in tomato, a recipe the sailors brought home.
The Atlanterhavsparken, a large aquarium cut into the shoreline three kilometres from the centre; the island of Godøy and its Alnes lighthouse; or an excursion to the Hjørundfjord. But staying in town all day is no compromise.
The Norwegian krone, and Norwegian — English is spoken fluently everywhere. Norway runs almost entirely on cards: cash is rarely needed.
