Nidaros Cathedral, then the Gamle Bybro and Bakklandet, then Torvet square and its market halls. That is the classic loop, entirely on foot, without rushing. Add Kristiansten fortress only if you have the time and the legs.
The former working-class district, now the most endearing corner of the city, across the Gamle Bybro: cobbled lanes, wooden houses, cafés with bicycles leaning against the shopfronts. Cyclists worn out by the hill can use the Trampe, a bicycle lift billed as the only one of its kind in the world.
The Gamle Bybro, a red wooden bridge from 1861, carries a gateway nicknamed the Portal of Happiness. The view from the deck is deservedly famous: on both banks of the Nidelva, old warehouses on stilts line up their ochre, rust and mustard facades, mirrored in still water.
