Hotel Riu Caribe: rebuilt in 2023, on the sheltered side of Cancún

Hotel Riu Caribe sits at kilometre 5.5 of Boulevard Kukulcan, and that number decides a great deal. The Cancún hotel zone is shaped like a seven. The long arm, facing east, takes the swell and the seaweed. The top bar, facing Mujeres Bay, stays sheltered. Riu Caribe is on the top bar. Calm sea, few waves, and a beach markedly less affected by sargassum than those further south. Add a complete renovation finished in the summer of 2023, from the lobby to all 506 rooms by way of every restaurant, and you have a five-star family all-inclusive that no longer resembles what pre-2023 reviews describe. One honest reservation: this is where Riu holds its RIU Party nights, and the hotel houses two clienteles under one roof who are not looking for the same thing. Knowing which one you are changes everything.

What did the 2023 renovation change?

Far more than a refresh. Riu redid the lobby, the reception, the common areas, the six restaurants and all 506 rooms, one by one. The work finished in the summer of 2023.

The practical consequence goes beyond decor. The single pool of the old days became a set of basins: one with a swim-up bar, one for children, and family pools, including infinity pools facing the sea.

A reading tip before you shop: any review dated before 2023 describes a different hotel. The criticisms about room condition and pool count still circulating online come almost entirely from before the work. Check the date before you form an opinion.

Why is the beach at kilometre 5.5 different from the others?

The Cancún hotel zone traces a seven. The long arm runs south, facing east, exposed to Atlantic currents. The top bar runs west to east, facing north toward Mujeres Bay, sheltered from those same currents.

Riu Caribe is on the top bar. Two things follow. The sea there is generally calm, with few waves, which counts enormously when you travel with young children. And sargassum arrives in far smaller quantities than on the southern stretch or in the Riviera Maya.

This is not a guarantee and we will not give one: during a massive episode, no beach on Mexico's Caribbean coast is spared. But recent reviews of this hotel almost never mention seaweed, which is not the case everywhere on this coast. For a Canadian family that has already had a week spoiled by sargassum, that is the argument that matters most.

What is RIU Party, and should you be wary of it?

RIU Party is a concept Riu launched in Los Cabos, brought here and nowhere else in Cancún. Four themed nights a week, on site: the White Party, the Jungle Party, the Neon Party and the Pink Party. Guests from another Riu in Cancún come over to attend.

Seventy-four rooms make up the Party zone, with bars of its own. It is an owned, deliberate product, and for the right traveller it delivers the best fun-to-value ratio in the hotel zone.

The flip side shows up in the reviews and deserves saying. The music carries. Travellers report noise late into the night and lively corridors in the small hours. Older guests and families who came for quiet say they were disappointed, and they are right to be when nobody warned them.

That is the real work of an advisor at this address: finding out whether you want the party or the peace, and placing you accordingly, in the Party zone or as far from it as possible. Both answers are good ones. The bad answer is failing to ask the question.

Which room should you choose, and which should you avoid?

Twelve categories, and three criteria are enough to navigate them.

The first is the view. The Double Standard is 32 square metres with a balcony or terrace and no guaranteed view. The sea-view double is exactly the same size, with a side or partial view. The front sea-view double faces the water head-on. Since the floor area does not change, you are paying for the view and nothing else. It is up to you to say what that is worth.

The second criterion is the connecting door. Four categories offer one, two of them with a sea view. For a family of five or six, that is the most flexible solution. Above them, the 67-square-metre Family Suite gives you two separate bedrooms, and it is the category we recommend as soon as teenagers are involved.

The third criterion is the Party zone. RIU Party rooms are 32 square metres like the others, but they sit in the festive sector. Book one knowing that, or avoid it knowing that. Never by accident.

Two categories deserve a separate mention. The Swim-Up rooms, with direct pool access from the terrace, are adults only and there are very few of them: they go months ahead. And the Accessible category, 35 square metres, is a genuine room adapted for reduced mobility, bookable as such.

Where do you eat?

Six restaurants. Coral is the main buffet, open for all three meals. Five tables round it out: Kulinarium for refined cooking, Margarita for Mexican, Shangri-la for Asian, a steak house grill, and Pepe's Food for snacks and quick grilling.

Only one dress code is documented, at Shangri-la, which asks for resort formal. For the other tables, the usual evening smart casual applies as it does across Riu in Mexico: long trousers and closed shoes for men at dinner.

Nine bars, including a sports bar open around the clock and Kahlo, a swim-up bar reserved for guests eighteen and over.

One honest word about the food, because it is the second complaint that recurs. Some travellers find the buffet repetitive, and cocktails are often described as watered down. Cleanliness and service, on the other hand, earn constant praise. This is not an address you choose for its table; it is one you choose for its beach, its renovation and its atmosphere.

What are the pools and the beach like?

Five pools, including infinity basins facing the sea, a pool with a swim-up bar and a children's pool. That is the direct legacy of 2023: before the work there was only one.

One physical detail worth knowing in advance, because otherwise you discover it on your first afternoon: the building is ten storeys and it casts its shadow over the pools in the early afternoon. For a February traveller who came looking for sun, that is something to weigh rather than to endure.

The beach is white sand, with a lifeguard, loungers and umbrellas provided. It is lovely, and it is short. Several travellers find it narrow for the size of the property, and it fills up quickly in high season. We would rather say so than let the brochure leave it out.

Another layout reality: the beach has no washrooms, no bar and no lounger service. Everything is fetched from the hotel. It is the most frequent complaint after the noise, and it is an easy constraint to manage once you know about it.

Is it a good hotel for children?

Yes, and for concrete reasons rather than for the signage. The calm water of Mujeres Bay is the first argument: a five-year-old swims here in water that does not knock them over, which is far from true on the east-facing side.

RiuLand takes children aged four to twelve, from nine in the morning to nine at night, which covers the evening and genuinely frees the parents. A children's pool completes the picture.

Two limits to know. Teenagers have no club of their own, so a family with thirteen to seventeen year olds relies on the beach, the pools and the water sports. And the hotel has no waterslides and no water park: a family coming for that will be disappointed.

Wi-Fi also deserves a mention for families. It is free, but travellers report a limit of around two devices. With two parents and two teenagers, four phones make four devices. Plan to share, or talk to us and we will check the rule in force on your dates.

How do you get there from Quebec?

Cancún is reachable non-stop from Montreal and from Quebec City year-round, with departures multiplying from late autumn through spring. The flight runs around four and a half hours.

From the airport to the hotel, allow about twenty minutes by car. With a package shared transfer, plan for more depending on the number of stops. Kilometre 5.5 is near the entrance to the hotel zone, which often works in your favour both coming and going.

One thing to know about the location: kilometre 5.5 is quiet. Cancún's shopping and nightlife hub sits further along the boulevard, around kilometres 9 and 12. Going out from here means a bus or a taxi, which is simple and frequent, but it is still a trip. If your idea of a holiday runs through walking out to dinner every evening, this is the wrong address.

For the country and its regions, our Mexico page covers the ground, and our Cancún page presents the other addresses in the hotel zone.

A valid Canadian passport is enough for a tourist stay, with no visa. Mexico is gradually replacing the paper tourist card with an entry stamp showing the length of stay granted. Check the number of days written on it, because an officer can grant less than you asked for. For current requirements, consult travel.gc.ca before you leave.

What disappoints, said plainly

The hotel's rating among Canadian travellers is solid and the staff earn constant praise, as do the entertainment team and the cleanliness. The complaints lie elsewhere, and they are always the same.

Noise comes first, and it flows directly from the RIU Party concept. Loud music, late nights, lively corridors in the small hours. That is the price of a formula other guests love.

Food comes next: the buffet is judged repetitive after a few days, and cocktails watered down. The à la carte tables do better.

Crowding is the third point. In high season the pools and the beach fill up, and staff run short at peak hours.

Add four smaller irritants that are easy to anticipate: the pools close around seven in the evening, the beach offers no service, Wi-Fi is limited in the number of devices, and the room televisions are not smart TVs.

What almost never appears in the reviews, and deserves pointing out: no notable complaint about sargassum, about check-in waits, about timeshare selling or about room condition. That last one is the direct dividend of the renovation.

When to go?

From December to April, Cancún is dry and sunny, and that is the best window. It matches our winter exactly.

The rains and the hurricane season run from June to November, peaking in September and October. Sargassum arrives from April to October along the coast in general, peaking in June, July and August.

The nuance that gives this address its value: the north orientation of its beach protects it better than average during those months. A traveller set on going in June or July who worries about seaweed has better odds here than elsewhere on this coast. Better odds, not certainty.

Who this suits, and who it does not

It suits the family who wants calm water and a beach spared by the seaweed, in a hotel rebuilt to new and rated five stars. It suits the group of friends or the couple who enjoy atmosphere, music and themed nights, and who choose the Party zone knowingly. It suits the traveller who plans to stay put rather than go out every evening.

It suits poorly the light sleeper and anyone looking for complete quiet, especially in a room near the festive zone. It suits poorly the family who wants waterslides, the family travelling with teenagers looking for a club of their own, and the traveller who wants to walk out every night.

Two other addresses answer those needs. Hotel Riu Cancun, in Punta Cancún, is reserved for guests eighteen and over and puts Coco Bongo within walking distance: it is the choice for adults who want the party and the walk. The Riu Palace Peninsula stays family-friendly in a higher tier and a calmer register, for those who want children and quiet in the same week.

Booking Hotel Riu Caribe with an advisor

At this address, one question decides your holiday: do you want the party or the peace? The answer determines your wing, your floor and your category. It also determines the month, because the atmosphere shifts with the season. And the Swim-Up category books months ahead because there is only a handful of them.

Call 1 866 628-6241. You will reach someone who knows this address and who has time for you. We look together at what is actually free on your dates, we pick the right wing and the right room, and we stay a phone call away while you are there. That is the difference between booking alone in front of a screen and leaving with someone behind you.

RIU also runs the Riu Cancun, the Riu Palace Las Americas, the Riu Palace Peninsula, the Riu Palace Kukulkan and the Riu Ventura in the same area. To compare every resort in the chain, see our guide to RIU all-inclusive resorts.
