On the bluff, not on the beach

Here is the point to grasp before booking, because several sites get it wrong. Cocobay is not a feet-in-the-sand resort. The cottages occupy a cliff and a slope above the bay, and you walk down to the beaches rather than stepping straight onto them.

Three beaches are reachable from the property: Valley Church, Ffryes and a small discreet cove. In exchange for the walk you get an open sea view from every verandah and sunsets few addresses on the island can offer. Which cottage to choose

Three levels structure the property. The Sea Breeze level holds the Garden View and Deluxe View cottages, without private pools, the most affordable. The Silver Sand level adds the Deluxe Pool Cottage and the Premium Pool Suite, with a plunge pool. The Starfish level, at the water's edge, offers the Waterfront Pool Suite and the Azure Waterfront Pool Suite.

Every cottage sleeps two, with a king bed, a private sea-facing verandah, an outdoor shower and custom-made wooden furniture. The private plunge pool is the real step up, more than the floor area.

Where you eat on site

Rafters is the main restaurant, included in the plan. The Cliffside serves more worked cooking, the Sandy Ground terrace handles the sunsets and the Cocoa Coffee Cafe the morning coffee.

One detail deserves stating plainly. Sheer Rocks, an acclaimed restaurant on the property, belongs to independent operators: it is not covered by the all-inclusive and also serves the public. In the same way, only two of the four bars run on the included plan. Better to know on arrival than when the bill comes.

Is it an all-inclusive?

Yes, with the qualifications above. The plan covers breakfast, lunch, afternoon bites, poolside refreshments, dinner daily, poured drinks at the two included bars, non-motorised water sports, guided walks, yoga and fitness sessions.

Adults-only: what that changes

The minimum age is eighteen, without exception. No children, no loud entertainment, no evening show. Silence is the main product of this address.

The clientele is made of couples, honeymoons and travellers who return year after year. The absence of televisions contributes more than you would think: people read, talk to each other and watch the sun go down, which does not happen in a six-hundred-room resort.

The pools, the spa and the activities

Several infinity pools spread across the bluff, alongside the private plunge pools of the upper categories. The resort does not publish an exact number and we would rather not invent one.

A spa operates on site, with treatment rooms open to the cliff. Yoga, fitness sessions, guided walks and non-motorised water sports — kayaks, snorkelling and paddleboards — are included. No casino.

Who this resort suits

It fits couples looking for quiet, a sunset view and a private plunge pool, without needing a large resort around them. It fits travellers happy to go without a screen for a week. It fits people who like walking down to the beach rather than camping on it.

Families cannot stay. Anyone who insists on a beach at the foot of their room, a wide choice of included restaurants, or good accessibility for reduced mobility, will be better served elsewhere. Our advisors will say so plainly.

What to know before you book

The resort states forty-five minutes by road from V.C. Bird International Airport, on the opposite coast. Antigua lies inside the hurricane belt, whose season runs from 1 June to 30 November, with a peak in August and September.

The East Caribbean dollar is the official currency, though US dollars circulate everywhere, and driving is on the left.
