Let us say it at the outset, because it is the only useful thing: Sugar Ridge no longer takes hotel guests. Operations stopped in 2020 and did not resume. The estate, on the heights above Jolly Harbour, has become a residential development, and the hotel has disappeared from the industry's booking systems. If you were trying to book a room here, this page explains why that is not possible and which Antigua addresses to consider instead.

Looking for a hotel in Antigua? Start here

If you landed on this page trying to book, here is the shortcut. Antigua has around fifteen operating properties, and our page of Antigua hotels and all-inclusive packages presents them all.

In the same stretch of the west coast, minutes from Sugar Ridge, four addresses are worth considering depending on your profile: Cocobay Resort, COCOS Hotel, Jolly Beach Antigua, Galley Bay Resort and Spa and Hermitage Bay. An AquaTerra advisor can point you to the right one in a single conversation, whether you travel as a couple, a family or a group. Call 1 866 628-6241.

What happened

Sugar Ridge closed in March 2020 and never reopened as a hotel. The estate, some forty hectares on a ridge above Jolly Harbour, was converted into a residential development under the name Sugar Ridge Homes, selling villas, condominiums and building lots.

The former hotel's official website now redirects to the developer's. The brand's Instagram account describes itself as Antigua's finest residential community. And the Antigua and Barbuda tourism authority no longer classifies it as a hotel but as a villa property on a room-only basis, bookable by email.

How we can be certain

The question deserves serious treatment, because many websites still claim otherwise. Three checks settle it.

First, inventory. No major booking system sells a room at Sugar Ridge: the listing has vanished from Expedia, from Hotels.com and from the systems the travel industry uses. Second, reviews. The most recent guest comment published on TripAdvisor dates from March 2020, out of more than 1 300 reviews: six years of complete silence. Third, rates. The property's Google listing still exists and still presents it as a four-star hotel, but it shows no price at all and invites you to contact the property directly, while every neighbouring hotel displays a nightly rate.

Can you still sleep there?

Yes, but not in a hotel. Villas and condominiums owned by private individuals are let by the night, one unit at a time, through villa rental agencies or peer-to-peer accommodation platforms. The tourism authority quotes a rate of around eight hundred US dollars a night.

What disappears with the hotel formula deserves saying plainly: no front desk, no meal plan, no estate-wide room service, no kids' club, no package sold by a tour operator. What remains is a whole villa, a full kitchen, space, and a view that reaches Montserrat on a clear day. It is a good formula for a self-sufficient group with a rental car, and a poor one for anyone expecting hotel service.

Which hotel to choose instead, by profile

If what appealed about Sugar Ridge was the idea of a small elevated property with a view and privacy rather than a large resort, two addresses reproduce exactly that formula. Cocobay Resort lines up its pastel cottages on a bluff above three beaches, adults-only, with no televisions in the rooms. COCOS Hotel occupies a ridge between Valley Church and Jolly Beach, in wooden cottages, for exactly two people.

If it was the district that drew you, Jolly Beach Antigua sits at the foot of the same hill, on a mile of sand, all-inclusive at a reasonable price. For the upper end on the same coast, Galley Bay Resort and Spa and Hermitage Bay rank among the best-rated on the island.

And if what you wanted was a whole villa rather than a room, tell your advisor: that is a product we know how to assemble, on Antigua as elsewhere.

The estate today: what still earns the drive

One thing was added rather than removed. Rokuni, an Asian-inspired restaurant previously established at Nonsuch Bay on the island's east side, moved to Sugar Ridge in early 2025. It is one of the finest tables on the west coast and it welcomes the public.

For a traveller based elsewhere in Jolly Harbour, that becomes a reason to climb the hill for dinner, with the view thrown in. Your advisor can tell you how to book a table.

The Jolly Harbour area

Jolly Harbour remains one of the best-equipped districts on Antigua: a marina, a shopping village, restaurants, a grocery, a golf course, and two of the island's finest beaches minutes away, Jolly Beach and Valley Church.

It makes a practical base for anyone renting a car and planning to cover the island. Allow about thirty minutes by road from V.C. Bird International Airport, on the opposite coast.

What to know before booking on Antigua

Antigua lies inside the hurricane belt, whose season runs from 1 June to 30 November, with a peak in August and September. High season runs December through April.

The East Caribbean dollar is the official currency, though US dollars circulate everywhere. Driving is on the left, a British inheritance that surprises Canadians renting a car. For entry requirements, consult travel.gc.ca before departure.

Talking to an advisor rather than a booking engine

This page exists because the online information about Sugar Ridge has been out of date for six years and still ranks well. It is precisely the kind of situation where an advisor beats a website: we check what is actually open, actually sold and actually suited to what you want, before you pay.
