Frequently Asked Questions
At a large industrial port complex on the Gulf of Thailand that runs on container traffic. Let's be blunt: nobody goes ashore at Laem Chabang for Laem Chabang. Nothing there is walkable, and the terminal is simply a gateway to Bangkok or Pattaya.
About 130 kilometres, or an hour and a half to two hours each way depending on traffic. That means three to four hours of driving to subtract from your day. On a tight schedule, the capital becomes a risky bet.
It's possible but not advisable: no practical public transport serves the terminal directly. Organised excursions and pre-booked private transfers remain the safest way to get back aboard on time. A Bangkok traffic jam is unforgiving.
The Grand Palace and Wat Pho, which are within walking distance of each other. The first concentrates the splendour of the kingdom, glazed roofs and the royal chapel of the Emerald Buddha; the second holds an enormous reclining Buddha. Many itineraries add a cruise on the Chao Phraya river or through the canals.
Shoulders and knees covered, without exception. The rule is strictly enforced in royal and religious compounds, and a passenger in a tank top or shorts will be turned away. Bring light but covering clothes: the heat and humidity are demanding.
Often, yes. Pattaya lies about forty kilometres south of the terminal, under an hour away, and offers a lively seafront, city beaches, markets and seafood restaurants. It is the sensible choice when the call runs no more than eight or nine hours.
Often longer than an ordinary day. Lines frequently extend the call into the evening, or even across two days, precisely because Bangkok is far. Check your schedule before choosing a plan: it, and nothing else, decides between the capital and the coast.
The Thai baht. Major sites, shopping centres and restaurants in Bangkok take cards, but markets, taxis and street stalls are cash only. There is nothing to buy in the port area itself: change or withdraw before you leave, or plan a stop on the way.
Thai. English is common in hotels, major sites and among guides, patchier with drivers and neighbourhood shopkeepers. French is rare. Have your return address written in Thai before taking a taxi.
November to February, the cool dry season: it is the only time a full day walking around Bangkok stays comfortable. From March to May the heat becomes punishing; from June to October monsoon downpours stretch driving times further still.
